What is the best method for storing ammo?? In the safe? go buy ammo cans? Does anyone use any of the drop in humidity packages?? I guess I should ask , of these methods how long can I store ammo and expect it to be good? What is the proper way to keep mags loaded? 30 rounds in a 30 round mag? 26 rounds in a 30 round mag ect. |

50 cal cans are convenient. They are water and air tight, stack and have handles. Desiccant packs are not required for ammo you intend to burn up in the next year or 2. If you plan on long term storage, a desiccant pack in the can is good insurance. The secret is to close the can and leave it closed. Every time you open it you let moist air in. USGI magazines can be stored fully loaded indefinitely without damage or loss of spring tension. |

I don't know. I buy lots of Turkish 8mm from '42 '44 '47 and '50 and have not yet had one fail to fire. Proabably fired about 2000 rounds so far this year. I have no idea how they store it, but I bet you or I can store it better. I keep mine in 50 cal. ammo boxes. I rarely open them, except for use or storing more. |

Not only does storing the ammunition in a "Ammo Can" help 'preserve' the ammo - but it will provide ballistic protection if your home should catch on fire. My FD did a few tests once in a training burn - because a few of us were curious. Also - if you have ammunition, or a weapons safe in your home, and you do have a fire - let the FD know when they arrive. They aren't out to take your guns; but it may change their tactics on fighting the fire. Also - try not to have a weapons safe on the upper floors of you home if you have a multi-level house. It tends to fall through fire weakened floors - Smushing the unlucky firefighter beneath it. I know those thin, metal ammo cans don't seem like much- but they will contain ammo when it 'cooks off'.
