I've been using Barnes X bullets for some time for my hunting rifles, everything from .257 Roberts to .375 H&H. They penetrate very well on everything from Antelope to Cape Buffalo. Since I've been loading my own ammo for my carbine, I wondered if the 53gr. Barnes XLC bullet would have anyplace in my defensive ammo toolbox. I've ordered a couple hundred rounds and will test it for penetration on steel, glass and masonry. Anybody have any thoughts on this. I probably would not use it for general defensive purposes, but it might come in handy in some situations.

Let us know how you make out. I have been curious about their performance myself.

I would like to know too.  Barnes has always performed well for us in everything from muzzleloaders to .30-.378 Weatherby.  I bet it will kick ass in your tests too and I am soon going to be re-loading some .223 and might just try some myself.

Could be the ticket for us 16 inch barreled, 1 in 9 twist guys.  Just remember, controlled expansion doesn't have the wounding potential that fragmentation does.  It is however, more consistent and does so at longer ranges.  I bet that it would be a good penetrator on steel, behind M855 of course, but much better than M193.

Of course the same bullet with driving bands, and a little tunsten cavity would kick a$$.  I wonder if it will penetrate pass 16 inches in gelatin.  I wouldn't be suprised at all if it did.  I doubt we will ever find out though.  Maybe test it on a coyote?
