$862 bucks (Upper) vs ~ $600~$650 (complete 9mm AR, various sources) Why? |

if you look for sales and assemble yourself you can beat that price pretty easily.
I spent less than 600 to assemble my whole pistol. since there is nothing to index and no gas block to put on, there is no special way to put the upper together. even not on sale with the glut of standard parts out there now that is not really a good deal on 9mm stuff. http://karrisguns.com/kg-spectre-9mm-16-rifle-upper.aspx 400 bucks for the complete upper. figure another 100 for the kak adapter you are up to 500. 25 to 50 for the buffer they show. 550 and then another 20 bucks for the mag, when psa has them on sale. still under 600 for the same sort of stuff they have. |

You're also linking a YHM upper which IMHO is an upper level builder like RRA. Both are excellent brands but not in the budget bracket like PSA or Anderson or Radical Firearms.
Go to PSA's site and price out a complete 9mm upper & block and a magazine, that's an apples to apples comparison. Last time I saw a PSA 9mm upper w/BCG I think it was on sale for $350, add another $100 for their magwell block & mag. Nowadays a dedicated lower is about what a quality magwell block runs. I paid like $150 years ago for my Hahn block and recently got a dedicated Glock lower on sale from PSA for $180. I've got gear from RRA, YHM, PSA, RF and Anderson. None of it is junk but there's a reason why RRA & YHM stuff costs more than others. Sometimes you want Lexus grade, other times Kia grade gets the job done. Edit: As to why, some put a lot of money in their lower/trigger and want to use that for 9mm as well vs a complete rifle with just std. parts. Or would rather drag one rifle & one upper to the range instead of two rifles. For 9mm I'd rather have a complete rifle to run a dedicated length buffer. |

YHM is high/over priced, but I don't personally think they are upper tier. I know some will argue that they are, but I have a fair number of their parts and they are good, but certainly not great.
When it comes to std ARs, I would put RRA and YHM in the quality mid tier - and the top tier is usually the likes of Noveske, La Rue, BMC, LMT, Daniel Defense, etc... I'm not sure there really is a top tier 9mm, unless someone wants to make the case that Colt would be the top tier in AR9s. RRA is good quality and typically good prices - definitely a better deal than YHM. Prices on other stuff are all over the map. Years ago, quality blocks were $150-200 and regular lowers were >$100. Now, you can get a decent KAK block for $100 and a decent lower for $40 - roughly the same price as low end dedicated lowers. |
