I have a never fired DPMS RFA2-AP4A AP4, and unfortunately there's no suitable range handy for practice, the local indoor range is pistol caliber only.  I'm totally new to ARs, and rifles generally, except for my 10-22.  I'm now determined to have a 9mm AR. There seem to be all kinds of options popping up (just today I see a AR pattern FX-9 9mm for $600). So, should I convert my DPMS to 9mm or buy a standalone 9mm AR?

If I do an OLY convert, is it true that with an Olympic Arms upper I just swap uppers and that's it?  But I'm stuck using OA plastic mags.

If I mate an RRA complete upper to my DPMS lower, I'll just need a magazine well adapter, and a new buffer tube, but I'll be able to use colt 9mm mags.

Or I could just say screw it, leave the DPMS in the closet, and buy a complete carbine, that uses Glock mags.  I've read through the   AR15 9mm FAQ , but confusion is rules...Thanks for any advice.  I don't have any prior investment in 9mm mags of any type.

Truth is you have many options. You can do a convert to 9mm upper with a magwell adapter. Check on prices on that. I built one of those and it was fine once I got the hang of how to adjust everything.

Another option: Buy a 9mm AR. I did that route also, sort of. I got a dedicated CMMG Mk9 lower, a CMMG 9mm ramped bolt and a RRA 16 inch barrel and put together a rifle. It worked great also.

In the end I sold both of them as neither was exactly accurate. I then bought a Just Right Carbine in 9mm that used Glock mags. It was cheaper than the "real AR" but it was smoother and much more accurate. It has become a favorite range toy as everyone who shoots it loves it. 100% reliable and you can shoot it all day. Hits where you aim and never causes any drama. I have never missed my 9mm AR's. I sold them for a good price and got this JRC and had money left over for lots of ammo in the end.

Others have had varying luck with 9mm AR's and I am happy for those who have one that works well and is accurate. I just never got good accuracy with the two I had. But, as they say, YMMV

I just picked up a brand-new-in-the-plastic-bag Colt 6951 9mm so I didn't have to waste time figuring stuff out.

For the record, the fit and finish  of it is uninspiring.
The rollmark is uneven, and 'light' on the left side, the roll pins that hold the mag adapter in look like the were installed by a gorilla on his 2nd day using a lopsided rock, (they stood proud of the lower and had edges sharp enough from the rock beating on them that they were slicing skin), and the barrel nut was just a little loose so the barrel felt a tad bit wobbly.
And Colt couldn't be bothered with a dedicated lower?
Really?

After tuning it up a bit - (why the hell did *I* have to tune up a brand new Colt?),

i love it just a little less than my 9mm X95.
Both nice weapons, and with a few other complete weapons/calibers - I dont have to swap parts from one to another to shoot something different.

My point is that I'd rather have a dedicated purposebuilt weapon that is complete instead of swapping parts around and re-aligning stuff for zero and hold over....
I don't have Glocks, so the Colt mags are fine for me.
But if I didn't already have the X95 using Colt mags, I was looking *really* hard at an Angstadt Arms 9mm.
If you can afford a complete dedicated weapon without dipping into the kid's Snoopy sneaker fund, go that way.
It never hurts to have the extra weapon when the Zombies attack and you need the wife to cover the back yard.

Just my opinion.
I don't claim to be the smartest guy in the room, and sometimes it's just me and the cat.
