I'd like to have a 16" 9mm AR upper that I can swap back and forth with an Anderson lower that I just use for my 22lr upper right now. Would it be more cost effective to build a real basic upper or just buy one?

I've been doing my research and prices really seem to vary, like all things, you get what you pay for but I really just need a budget one at this point. I can upgrade down the line if needed.

Here's the build I've been thinking: (prices are rough estimate)
Anderson stripped upper: 50
16" barrel: 100
BCG: 130-200
handguard: 40

Cheapest complete upper w/BCG is from PSA for 430 but it's nicer so not really comparing apples to apples

I'd like to use my FCG and lower as is with minimal work to switch from the 22LR upper to the 9mm. Any recommendations on an inexpensive mag block?

Thanks

I think you will like bottom loader block.
Basically you need something that can just drop in without having to take something apart like the bolt hold open.........

I am at a point where I might just buy the complete upper from someone..........My 9mm AR build gave me problems from the start.......and with that said.....I had the barrel from one source and the bolt from another.......upper from another and on and on..........when I had issues.........I contacted the barrel source first.......and with that said...........no help at all.......: (

That makes sense.. a pieced together upper will have no support if there is an issue. I'll keep that in mind.

At the end  of the day it can be a roll of the dice.......not to say I've had plenty of AR uppers assembled from various vendors that worked fine.........but this last build was a headache...............

With 9mm ARs there is no set standard and every company seem to spec things a little different. Most of the issues seem to be when you mix bolt A with a barrel from company B. Sometime it runs fine for some and is a headache for a few. Not many issues with a strip upper/hand guard/mag block.

I am always in favor of building. I would recommend you buy the bolt and the barrel from the same company. This may not be what you want to hear, but stay far away from the cheap brands. Stick to either Colt, Rock River Arms, CMMG, and Spike (if they still make 9mm) and you should be fine.

Get on the PSA mailing list.
They run their uppers on sale every month or two.

From my research you will save a lot vs. building your own.
And, PSA will back theirs up with some awesome service.

On a positive side note, once you get a 9mm AR to run right it usually dead nuts reliable after that.

It's kind of dishartening whenever I hear about feed/ejection issues with a 9mm build. I've put 2 Colt patterns together over the years and have never had a issue. Must have gotten lucky I guess.

Thanks, I'll watch PSA. I buy most of my stuff from them anyway, stock seems limited at the moment...

How about Macon Armory 9mm conversion with complete upper equipped with 16 inch barrel and 11 inch keymod freefloat, with a bottom load mag block and heavy, adjustable extended buffer for $799 plus shipping.
Installs on a standard lower in about a minute......and if you have issues we will help you solve them.

Thanks Rudy, I've read good things unfortunately it's a little more than I'm looking to spend at the moment. I will keep it in mind though.
