I really like my upper once I got it working. had FTE, and erratic ejection. it was hitting the back portion of the port, had to open up the ejection port, based the port size on my DPMS slick side upper, milled further back then needed but wanted to make sure it was clearing the port

I didn't have that problem, the problem I did have is that if the bolt rotates counter clockwise even a little the rear left corner of the gas key gets hung up on a channel for the side charger. I had to bevel the back corner of the gas key so that it is guided back clockwise in that case. Solved all my problems. Matrix receiver and JP bolt here too.

Had an issue with cases doing the same and had cases getting under the charging handle. I ran a few hundred rounds of brass 9mm  through it and everything cleared up. I'm not sure why it did that but I'm glad it fixed itself. I would have called matrix arms before moding or milling the port.

Might it have been that putting some wear on the parts helped get them moving as designed, rather than slower due to more drag?

Just a thought, but a lot of semiautomatic problems seem to be fixed by loosening them up just a bit, often by shooting them (1911s come to mind...shoot 500 rds before function test shooting them, etc).

Yeah it happens. I thought I was going to have to send the upper off to matrix arms and go back to the gibbz upper I was using before.

didn't want to waste time/shipping sending if off. I knew the issue it was having so in the vise it went. I've put about 100 rounds through it and I get a nice brass pile to my right.

how do you use the gibbz for 9mm when a modified key is needed?

What is this modified key you speak of?  I placed a 9mm cmmg bolt in the upper and it worked great. No moding needed.  I think in a standard AR you have to use their mod cam pin but the 9mm bolt does not have a cam pin.
