What tool do I use to hold the receiver while I tighten the barrel? I've heard the normal vise block won't work.
I will also be building a 9mm with the same 556 upper. If I remember correctly the 9mm barrels don't have the same bolt locking
feature that a 556 barrel does.

In cases where I cannot use a Geissele reaction rod I use a PRI receiver block, mainly for my 9mm builds.

I used this Vise block on my last few barrel installs and it worked great.  I've torqued barrels to around 60 ft/lbs with no problems.  You can't beat their prices either.

You're welcome.  Just remember when your using this type of receiver block you don't want to over tighten it in the vise.  It only needs to be snug enough that it doesn't slip out.  I switched from using the clamshell type vise block after a saw a video posted by ADCO of military armorers installing barrels this way.  Actually, they weren't using a vise block at all, just a vise with smooth jaws, but I care to much about my guns to do that.
