Hi everyone,
When buying a barrel... Can I use any barrel from any vendor as long as the barrel is a 9mm for my 9mm build? Is there anything to look for in specific since I have a 9mm conversion magblock from Palmetto. Is there variation in the barrel extension that I should look for? Thanks for replies! |

When you'd building a Colt-style 9mm AR, you don't need to look for a special barrel. If you were going with a Glock lower, that would be a different matter, but the Palmetto stuff is Colt style and should not require any special considerations. ...unless he's talking about the new PSA glock style lowers :) I know he said mag block, though. lol To OP... Yeah, any barrel should be fine... from a reputable source of course. The BCG is what would be the special consideration. Most BCGs are made to function with colt style mags. Glock mags require a "Glock cut"... which is just a little extra machining to allow the bolt to clear the more narrow feed lips on the Glock mags. |

I figured it was a Colt type because he's talking about a magazine block in the OP... |

Oh, disregard that last question. Looks like you were referring to the BCG That's true, it was about bolts. But current Glock-type lowers seem to have also done away with the type of feed ramp found in Colt-style lowers. Realistically that's not a big deal, since Glock magazines feed straight into the barrel, so they don't really "need" that ramp to make left/right feed magazines work. On the other hand, there's also nothing providing vertical support as the rounds feed, so I'm not sure that "all" 9mm AR barrels are going to work with "all" 9mm AR lowers... |
| When I attach the barrel to the upper, is it the same process and tools you would use as with a 5.56 barrel? Can I use a Magpul bev block for this? And I was thinking of going with a UTG rail. Do I need to order a barrel nut or the two rings? Or does the UTG rail come with specific barrel nut and other hardware? |

The barrel installation process is essentially the same, except that there's no gas tube to line up with the barrel nut. Some handguards index on the barrel nut, though, so it can be basically the same anyway. I can't speak to any specific rail that I haven't used, (and your "a UTG rail" is a pretty broad term), but it would be the same situation as if you were installing that rail on a 5.56mm barrel. |
