When I built my go to rifle, I actually built two identical rifles, but the second I never bought a bolt or barrel for. Well I am ready to finish it off and create a training rifle.
That being said I have no idea where to start, I knew nothing about .22lr build previous to the last couple days, and now after looking into them it seems they have such mixed reviews. Am I getting off getting a real dedicated 22lr barrel/bolt with mixed reviews or should I jsut get a conversion bolt and use a standard 5.56 barrel?? |

You'll get better accuracy with a real .22lr barrel. The twist rate is 1:16 (IIRC) and it won't have any gas tube/port to worry about fouling, either. I bought the Chiappa .22lr upper (M4-22) for my wife's build, and it has been reliable. The upper is plastic, but since the bolt moves in a stationary carrier, that doesn't bother me at all. Uses a standard lower, though you can leave out the buffer and spring, unless you want it there for weight balance. |

I have heard that out to 50 yards you may not notice too much of a difference between a dedicated .22 barrel and a 5.56 but after that you may start to notice accuracy deficiency. I can not do the tests though as I have a .22 dedicated barrel that is 20" and a 5.56 that is 7.5 so I don't think the accuracy challenge would be too fair.
For my build, I did go the route of buying a CMMG .22 barrel, conversion kit with collar, forward assist, and charging handle. Then I put the Taccom reliability kit in it and am using the Bonnie Packer S and W mag adapter. I am very pleased with the way she turned out, although I can not get her to reliably cycle sub sonics, it is my go to AR atm. BTW: I am sure the guys over in Rimfire central can help you out or point you in the right direction. |

Sounds like there is alot of work going into theses things, I would call it a whole new beast almost, but the .22lr is far from a beast haha..
I guess I cant say my builds are identical, on my 22.lr upper I got one without the forward assist so that will save me a couple bucks on components. I guess I can just start with a CMMG dedicated barrel and bolt that run about $350 and go from there as needed for reliability. Are the black dog mags still considered the best? |

Get a barrel and bcg from TACCOM. Reliability kit already built in.
Great accuracy and superb reliability. Also, all parts are U.S. made. Coversion kits give you 2-3" at 50 yards. A dedicated upper with correct .22 barrel will get you 1" or better at 50 yards. Dave N |

I have 2 units, 1 built 1 factory.
1st - SBR 7" 1/9 DTI (cut down from 20" DTI) using a Ciener 22 bolt assy. Once the tweaks to the ciener frame and new recoil spring were used. it's a screamer 2nd - 16" CMMG wasp upper. They work fine, suppressed even better What i'm saying is buy a complete upper, why mess around with this bolt, that bbl. If there's an issue one places deals with i,t vs. everyone saying it's not our product giving you problems. |

What are the magazines of choice these days?
Also looking at Taccom, do they require a special charging handle? Just looking at the prices of both Taccom and CMMG and they both are about the same and both have about the same reviews so its hard to choose one over the other.. |

I think most people around here vote for Taccom, not only because they are 100% US, but they are also reliable as hell. The only reason I chose the CMMG kit over the Tacom is because I wanted to use the S and W mags with the BP conversion and did not want to have to modify the Taccom bolt kit myself. I believe if you call and order your bolt kit through Taccom and explain that you want to use the S and W mags they may or may not mill your bolt/carrier for you. Either way I believe its a relatively easy process, I was just feeling lazy I suppose. If you want to just run Black Dawg magazines that run 100% but don't have a bolt hold open function, I would go with Taccom maybe, but then again I could really care less as long as its reliable. In this case both are great brands.
Building the .22 seemed easier to me than a full size, but that was probably because it was my 2nd build. These things are really rather easy to build especially since you have most of the parts. |

I just ordered the 16" .22lr CMMG barrel with FSB installed w/ barrel nut and end cap.
I like the idea of running the S&W mags with the BP adapter.. I ordered a couple S&W mags off MidwayUSA, which are on clearance right now. So I will also probably run the CMMG bolt so I dont have to modify the BP adapter. Will also probably pick up the Taccom pressure plug. Is the Taccom reliability kit worth it to pick up and install it on the CMMG bolt or should just run it first and see how it works?? |

We have two Dedicated CMMG stainless bolts. Both have been 100% reliable through many, many rounds and both work 100% with the SW mags and adapter.
Only experience with Taccom stuff is their barrels, firing pin and pressure plug. Good stuff. A couple people refer to American made parts. Does CMMG use foreign made parts? I was not aware of that if that is what is being implied. Both ours are several years old so maybe they went overseas to source stuff like the trend seems to be |

Since that time, things have continued to get better and better. Although the nature of our business continues to evolve, one thing does not—our commitment to meet each and every morning to pray for God’s wisdom in managing the enormous responsibility that comes with this business. By his grace, we have grown every year! CMMG is constantly looking for new ways to improve our products, processes and company at large. Both our customer service and product lineup continue to be second to none, and all of our rifles and firearms parts are made in the United States from the best materials available. CMMG guarantees its products against defects in material or workmanship for the life of the product. CMMG Inc. will repair, replace or substitute any product(s) if a defect in material or workmanship is found." At best some of the info shared sometimes is here say or kool-aid inspired testimonials. To evaluate or choose one brand over another one should look to the troubleshooting threads and use that info to judge the pros and cons of a particular product. |
