Finished my 22lr build using a CMMG bolt and barrel and since the weather had taken a turn for the better, I ran out to the local range to do a function check. Part of the build was installing a Taccom reliability kit. Well, I got three rounds of Federal bulk pack through my carbine before I had a failure to feed. Checking things out I found that the bolt was no longer under spring load. Hmmmm. I pulled the rear take down pin and this is what I found:

I would appreciate any advice you folks might offer as to how to address this issue. Tried to pull the rod out with a pair of smooth jawed pliers to no avail. It really is lodged in the tube. Thinking it through, my next step seems to be to drive out  the roll pin at the head of the tube and at least try and get the spring out, salvaging it if at all possible. Maybe with the spring out it will free up the recoil spring rod enough to get it out.  This sound about right?

What happened it the guide rod it stuck in the tube on top.  TACCOM fixes this issue by adding a 60 degree chamfer on the bolt tube. With it being a CMMG bolt I am not sure what they will do. You should be able to use tether pliers on the  back of the guide rod. It only sits in the backing plate there is no movement there. You could also remove a little material from the shoulder once you get it free.

Well, I got it fixed. I think. I disassembled the bolt and punched out the roll pin. This freed up the spring to pop out on one end.  Found that the top of the spring had overridden the flange on the guide rod and jammed it tight in the tube. Since the spring wouldn't come out, I found a long brass rod, ran it into the spring until it butted up against the rod inside the tube and gave it a tap.

The rod popped right out. I guess in my hurry to finish this project with the renovated bolt, I didn't swap out the OEM spring with the one in the Taccom kit which is wound a bit tighter and has a slightly smaller inner diameter. Can't get back out to the range until sometime next week so I don't know if it will work or not. Guess if it doesn't, I'll have to send it in to CMMG and see what they can do with it.

Here's a picture of the finished carbine:

That is the first time I've seen that happen.  Good example of learning something new everyday.

should have read this thread before posting mine this morning.

exact same thing happened to mine but Tim at Taccom fixed it for me.  he even put the proper radius on the unit to prevent it from happening again.  +1 for Taccom.

Thanks for posting in this thread Mike. I read your other thread about the CMMG kit and running 15-22 mags. I read this one before yours and noticed he was running what looks to be S&W's.

What block adapter are you guys using in your mil-spec lowers?

In seeing various people post I notice most, if not all, say the bolt doesn't lock back. Is that your experience also?

gtfoxy:

I'm using the Better Mag adapter available from Boonie Packer or Brownells.  Never got a chance to see if it would hold open the bolt though it works when I charge the carbine with an empty mag in place.

If using the Better Mag adapter with the Taccom BCG, order it from Taccom.
Tim is maching them to work with the Taccom bolt. They will also function with the others out there.

I'm running the original better mag adapter with a CMMG dedicated upper and the Taccom reliability kit.  I get LRBHO probably 98% of the time.  My guess is that the few times the bolt doesn't lock back is either from a light round or the fact that the conversion kit might have been moving slightly before I installed the pressure plug.

In any event, the system is very reliable now and I love using the SW mags for the interchangeability with my 15-22.

Thanks for the replies guys. I appreciate it.

I have a 15-22 but I am thinking about replacing it with a hand built one. I could sell it & keep my mags.

by sell it and keep your mags you mean to say keep it and build a separate dedicated rifle so you have two rifles, right?

Nice try. If only that would work with the significant other.

I would like to build a really light 22Lr. Not that the S&W isn't light, just don't want to go jerry rigging with that one. My only reserve is reliability. My S&W is a clock, well, after I fixed the extractor the first day that is.
