| I am completing my 9mm build and am using a rifle length tube and A2 stock. I have a standard rifle buffer (6" in length), a Hahn 9mm buffer (3.5" in length), as well as a Spikes 9 oz. buffer (4" in length). My goal was to use the spikes buffer with the standard spring. Should I get the Spikes spacer to limit travel with this setup? If so, which one? Is there a better spring I should be using? Thanks. |

Rifle length buffer tube with rifle length buffer will require a small spacer to limit bolt overtravel and reduce likelihood of bolt catch breakage.
Rifle length buffer tube with carbine length buffer will require a spacer to make up difference between rifle and carbine length buffer, plus a small spacer to limit bolt overtravel and reduce likelihood of bolt catch breakage. Rifle length buffer tube with a specialty buffer (not rifle or carbine length) will require some length of spacer, but that will vary and you should probably start using quarters at the bottom of the buffer tube. When you get to the amount of bolt travel you want, then take the quarters out, measure them and make up a spacer to that length. Standard action spring is fine. No need for xpower or specialty springs with semi setups and normal ammo. |

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the newbie question, but how do I know when I get the amount of travel I want? Is there a specific measurement I am looking for or is it just based on function? You want the bolt to travel past the bolt catch about the equivalent distance that a 5.56 bolt travels past the bolt catch. I don't recall the exact distance off the top of my head. If you have a 5.56 gun handy, you can eyeball it - it isn't all that critical if you are exact. The objective is to simply reduce the amount of bolt overtravel with the 9mm bolt so it lessens the likelihood of a broken bolt catch. Just an FYI - If you put an overtravel spacer in (or use a specialty 9mm buffer) and ever intend to use that lower for 5.56 ,make sure you remove the overtravel spacer and use an appropriate buffer. |

Hey Kevin,
Long time no chat. I wanted to add something for your mental database. My 9mm uses the VLTOR A5 tube (7 positions). This specialty tube uses a rifle length spring. The buffer I chose to run is the elongated 9mm buffer and sadly the standard "spacers" won't clear the bolt catch for BHO. Using a stack of $0.25 quarters as a metric I'd say the spacer is just shy of 1 quarter from working. I ended up using a piece of wood from a broom handle.
