I have a CMMG stainless conversion kit, but I want to upgrade to a dedicated upper. I was thinking about building my own with the bolt from the conversion kit, a CMMG barrel and collar (if I can ever find a pair), and an old upper that I have here. Two questions:
1. Will a standard barrel nut work? 2. What is a good option for the "gas block"? I mainly use an optic, so I would prefer a rail... Thanks! |

.22 AR actions are not gas operated. You don't need a gas block of any kind.
You can get a dummy one to mount a FS on if you want or to plug the gas holes in an AR barrel. My ST-22 UR still has the hole for the gas tube but there is no gas tube because it doesn't utilize gas. Don't bother building a .22 upper without a correct .22LR barrel. The correct diameter, twist rate and chamber are sort of the whole point. |

You have right. Get the CMMG barrel and don't forget the collar. Your conversion side rails will now connect to the barrel collar rather than the chamber adapter. The barrel mounts just like a standard AR barrel using all the same parts. Standard receiver is what you will use.
Put it all together and enjoy..... |

You don't have a target rifle with that set up. A receiver mounted optic would give the best results. I don't have test data with the same barrel mounted both ways but from my limited (10,000 rounds) though six different .22 dedicated rifles I don't think you will gain anything by using a FF with a sight mounted on it over any other options. You are up against a wall with the barrel and its cambering.
Now, if you want to spend some bucks and go with a better barrel....that is a new ball game. |
