I did a review of the DPMS bull barrel .22 upper. The thread was pretty long.
Should be in the DPMS Industry forum. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_2_30/211669_DPMS_AR__22_Bull_Barrel.html Dave N |

I was a little disappointed myself about the lack of threads, but I just resigned myself to the fact
that, "No news is good news". If people aren't complaining, they must be working. I know mine is. It shoots 3/4" groups at 50 yards with 36gr.HP Armscor and 1/2" with CCI when I can afford it.
So far my only disappointments are, no threads on the end of the bull barrel and it wont run S&W 15-22 magazines, but I can live with that. Jack... |

Love my DPMS AP4 22lr. Based off the 10/22. It cycles everything under the sun. Easy to clean to bolt. Never had a single hick-up what's so ever. I've shot several 1000+ round sessions without cleaning it and it still cycles. Ditto to what shadowcop says. DPMS has perfect performance, but the only part on the upper that is interchangeable is the handguard and flashhider. Everything else is proprietary. If you know what you want and what you need, the DPMS could be perfect for you. |

Picked mine up yesterday...went straight to the range and the bolt wouldn't go it....with no instructions with it i figured i must be doing something wrong.....finally traced the problem to the recoil spring guide rod...it had somehow gotten bent in shipping i guess...straightened it and it went together just fine....
my Brownells order won't be here until tomorrow so i only had the 10 rd backdog mag so shooting was slow ...mounted an Aimpoint and i was off to the races...me and my bros shot it until we got tired of loading the mag and functioning was flawless....i don't mean good, i mean no failures of any kind......this thing rocks....D I C K |

My 1st gen DPMS bull barrel shoots very good groups at 50 yards. Sounds like the new DPMS uppers are winners. |

Mine is the M4 style.......went to the range today with my 5 new black dog mags i got from Brownells....all but one functioned perfectly....it was one with the red follower and it seemed to stick down in the mag with 5 or so rounds left in the mag.....called Black Dog and asked if they could help and also to ask why some had red followers and some had black followers....i was told they would send me a 5 pack bag of Black ones (Which is the latest design) and will replace my red ones with no changes to the mag...the mags are very easy to clean just remove the floorplate and the spring will slide out...the red followers will also slide out for cleaning....The black ones will not so they must be larger and require that the 2 side sections of the mag must be unscrewed to install the new follower.......
i had a crappy rest and table at the range today plus i was using a milspec trigger so accuracy was suspect but i shot enough to decide to buy more of the Federal Auto match stuff that wallyworld sells...i had shot most of a box on my first session and it ran 100% with no issues at all....i also tried some of the bulkpack Remington standard velocity....accuracy seemed about the same but i had a ftf and a case rupture of a fired round which required a cleaning rod to punch the case from the chamber plus some just sounded and felt weaker than others.........we're putting on our first two gun rimfire match at our range this weekend and i feel good that my rifle is going to run great.......hope my pistol does.....maybe we'll put some of the stages on youtube or something.......good shoot'n......D I C K |

Jack,
If you want to run the 15-22 mags, check out Catch-22. They are making a spacer that allows full functionality with those magazines. Alex over at catch-22 is good people, he'll fix you right up. On another note: I'm working on a catch 22 bolt catch for the Nordic / DPMS models now. I am super busy at work but I expect to get back to the workbench next week to try and get it figured out. If it's sucessful it will have BHOA capability as well, which is one of the only things the Nordic/JP/DPMS lacks right now. JD |

I agree "Alex over at catch-22 is good people". I've had a few of his Catch-22 bolt catchs for some time, and had hacked my own "adapter" long before he had one. Also ...
If you want to run the S&W 15-22 mags in a mil-spec conversion, or dedicated upper such as CMMG, the Redi-Mag "better mag adapter" is a great option. Mine works flawlessly. Thread here on that: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_15/582919_Redi_Mag_SandW_Mag_adapter_for_CMMG_.html Both of the above have worked great for my CMMG upper. I have a slight preference for the Redi_mag solution as it doesn't require swapping bolt catches. But I wonder/doubt that either the Catch-22 + shims or Redi-Mag solution will work with the DPMS upper. The DPMS bolt is not a CMMG / Ciener / Atchison-style, right? I don't have, nor have I ever seen a DPMS upper, so obviously I am just speculating and have no idea what I am talking about, Yet that didn't stop me from posting |

I think the S&W mags were just too loose in the lower to feed reliably from what I understood talking with Alex. I don't have any, which is to say I had one and couldn't get it to work so I traded it for a BDM, which I still have. It was Alex that suggested the mod he makes to get them to work right.
The DPMS/Nordic/JP upper is proprietary and is nothing like the Ceiner, Atchisson, etc. It is based on the Ruger 10/22 design, which is mostly why it runs like a sewing machine time after time. Either way, the BDM with the upgraded follower does artificially hold the bolt open and feed better than the old red one. I would just like to have the actual BHO for better mag changes without having to charge the weapon with the handle to prevent bad muscle memory. More when I get the catch figured out..... JD |
| More than likely it is the 2nd generation AP4 upper since they haven't made any 1st generation since the late 90's. if it is the new 2 nd Generation it should use the Black Dog Machine Magazine (26,15 or 10 rounds). The 1st Gen AP4 used a proprietary 10 round mag. The bolt on the 2nd Gen AP4 is based on the 10/22 whereas the 1st Gen AP4 is based off the Colt 22 bolt conversion for the AR-15. |
