I received the DPMS Upper today for T & E.

I have not had a chance to shoot it. Nasty day here.
My initial impression is it appears to be a well built, solid upper.
It is totally different from the Atchisson bolt system. This is a very simple, straight forward bolt system.
The upper receiver is designed for this bolt. It is not a standard AR upper receiver. Outward appearance does look like a standard receiver with the exception of a smaller ejection port.

The forward assist is a dummy plug, but is there.
The bolt will lock back manually using the existing bolt catch.
The bolt looks to be solid with a rod and spring leading to the rear bolt block.

When the upper is opened, the rear block will drop to the point where the actual bolt catches on the charging handle.
The lug on the top of the bolt keeps it from clearing the charging handle and falling out.
The charging handle has to be released to remove the bolt.
The rear block is also beveled so the upper and lower close easily without having to push the BCG in.

I really like the simplicity of the bolt system. The feed ramp is part of the barrel chamber. So it can't move which should aid in reliability.
The bolt itself reminds me of a 10/22 bolt.

Here are some quick pictures. Poor quality but I'll have time to get better ones when I do the review.
Upper as it came:

Ejection Port:

Rifle as I will test it

Thanks for the info Dave ...

I ordered the AP4 .22 upper this weekend - I'm stoked to read your initial assessment/description. Sounds like they should be real shooters. I'll be looking forward to your Range Report.

This should be good. My Spikes ST-22 is fun but could some improvement when running cheap soft bullet ammo. Are you guys going to do function tests with different ammo?

I agree -. I've been spoiled using an all KIDD 10-22, so the reliability aspect will be interesting.
And yes - I have CCI, Federal bulk, Federal Automatch, Wolf ME/MT, Eley Sport, Winchester 333 etc. that I'll be running through the AP4.
I plan to use a magnified scope for accuracy tests, so I'll post that information as well with the reliability observations....

UPS says I'll have the upper tomorrow, so life permitting I plan to hit the indoor range Thursday.

Testing has been done

Runs with all "bargin ammo"

Have not found any ammo yet that will not function, we have tested every readily available cheap 22 ammo on the market.

As suspected the upper ran flawlessly.
It was cold so I'm sure on a warmer day I could get better results. I also tried a different optic than usual. So, to be fair, I'll mount the optic I always test with and hit the range later in the week.
The rifle ran great!. I used the supplied BDM mag, a CMMG 1st gen mag, a CMMG Gen ll mag and a BDM X mag with steel feed lips. All mags ran 100 %
I shot several types of ammo:
Fed Champion
Fed 550 Bulk
Fed Auto Match
Winchester 555
Wolf MT
Here is the range and the rifle on a CMMG lower with Mid Length Free Float

Here are some targets using a 3-9 optic with adjustable AO
Wolf MT @ 25 yards 10 shots

Wolf MT @ 50 yards 10 shots

Winchester 555 @ 25 yards

Winchester 555 @ 50 yards

As you can see, the groups opened up at 50 yards. But as I said, it was cold and I did not have my usual scope.
I was pretty happy with the fact that the rifle would shoot the Winchester bulk as well as match ammo, at least at 25 yards.

My wife had the opportunity along with about 100 other women to shoot this sweet 22LR from DPMS at a Diva-WOW event in Tx.
She loved it and of course wants to know when I am getting one ! It was topped with Nikon's new 2011 ProStaff Rimfire BDC 150 scope.
The ladies and guys who shot really liked this rig!

Lucky for my wife Christmas is right around the corner.

The off the shelf DPMS Bull Barrelled .22 arrived today.
Nice dark anodizing on it.
This one has very definite live round extraction. It popped live rounds out as fast as I could pull the charging handle.
Again, the action is super smooth. Almost like it's riding on ball bearings.
I found out the bolt is stainless steel and a melonite finish is applied. I'm sure this accounts for the smooth action, along with nice machining.
I'll be heading back to the range in the next couple of days using my regular rimfire testing scope.
Couple of pictures:

Note the charging handle is shorter than a standard charging handle. The cut out is narrower also which would keep rounds from hanging in the charging handle.
It's made of aluminum so any latch will work with it.

Hi All....

DPMS AP4 .22 LR Update:

I finally made it to the gun club today, but since it was -6F up here in Duluth, I opted for indoor testing, so, I was limited to a 25 yard maximum range for my unspophisticated testing and evaluation session.

The configuration I used was as follows:

DPMS AP4 22LR upper sitting on an RRA lower with a NM 2-stage trigger and Operator A2 stock.
Primary Arms Micro-Dot (non-magnifed) with an absolute co-witness to the Magpul rear MBUS and A2 front sight base.

I sighted it in with Federal Auto Match ammo, and once zeroed I was able to get this 10-shot grouping off-hand at 25 yards with the iron sights:

I then ran 300 rounds total through it utilizing the included 10-round Black Dog magazine and loaded with Federal Bulk, Winchester 333, CCI Mini-Mag, CCI Select, CCI Standard velocity, Federal Premium Target, Wolf Match Target and Wolf Match Extra. Everything performed flawlessly - not a single hiccup. I did drills engaging multiple targets from 7 yards, 15 yards, and 25 yards with double taps and head shots - I am very pleased with how the upper handles identically to a 5.56 M4gery.

Just for shiggles, I rested the rifle on a Caldwell bag and shot a 5-round grouping with Wolf Match Extra.... I was astonished at the accuracy.
The grouping was low as the red dot was sighted-in with the higher velocity Federal Auto Match, but, you can see the results.

Nice job DPMS! Looks like I have my training rifle!!!!

I took the new off the rack DPMS Bull Barrelled upper to the range today.
I had one double feed I never did figure out.
Fired 400 rounds (aside from the double feed) and it ran perfectly.

Temp was 37 degrees with a 10 mph wind
Ammunition was Winchester 555 Bulk 36 gr. HP
Wolf MT

25 yards Winchester bulk

50 yards

25 yards Wolf MT

50 yards Wolf MT

The Winchester bulk spread out at 50 yards and had a few flyers but it still shot pretty well for bulk pack
It's definetly a shooter.

Another feature I found is the DPMS can be dry fired without worrying about damage to the firing pin.
It uses basically a shortened AR15 firing pin.

You can dry fire the upper all you want. The firing pin will not hit the barrel....it will come about .015" short of hitting it. And because the design is like a std AR15 firing pin, the head of the pin hits the back of the bolt. Dry fire it all you want.

I wondered if it was already tested on cheap ammo. I am still going to test mine on cheap ammo as an excuse to shoot it more.

DPMS uses a lot of Blazer .22. I have not found any ammo it would not run with. I like Winchester bulk. It's much more consistant than Federal bulk.
This rifle will shoot cheap ammo nearly as well as other uppers shoot match ammo.

I would buy a box of several different .22 ammo. See what it likes.
I still like coper wash ammo. It just leaves less gunk in the chamber.

Dave,

I'm sure hoping it likes that 4,000 rnds of ARMSCOR Precision 36gr.HP
I invested in for the CMMG Sierra. My brother's S&W AR15-22
also likes the ARMSCOR.

I shot another 300 rounds today with 0 failures.
I tried some CCI Mini Mags today. It shot as well as any match ammo I've tried. 10 shot groups with one round on top of the first. Very impressive.

Are these in stock at DPMS currently? I guess you need to call to verify?

This is the issue I am having with all the manufacturers I deal with. They supply the big retailers and forget the guys that made them successful in the first place.
Not good for customer relations in my opinion.

We are simply "sold out" and building more.

The 22 uppers are "first in first out" regardless who orders and in what quantity.

First in first out.

i found one for sale on "Marks Armory" it came today, shipped in 2 days, and 2 my door in 4days.... looks great. but it did have a nice size dent on the brass deflect. it looks like the something hit the upper before it was anodized black.
