Hello fellow tactical .22 enthusiasts,

I just purchased a CMMG .22 conversion from Midway USA. I did hours of research before making my purchase and I am still confident I made a great purchase. There are countless positive reviews regarding this product and very few negative. I am not writing this to be negative, but rather to document my experience as a resource for others.

So when I received my conversion I wanted to take it to the range the same day. I unpackaged the product inspected it, wiped it down a little the added a few drops of oil then inserted the bolt and it went in smoothly. I reassembled my rifle, then broke it back down to remove the bolt, then much to my surprise it was stuck. I played with the action a little hoping it would work loose, but no luck. I decided to go on the range hoping that a little shooting would jar it loose, also thinking that it heating up then cooling down would help. The unit ran flawlessley  and is an absolute blast to shoot! After shooting the bolt remained stuck so I emailed CMMG that evening and by 10am the next morning I had a response asking me to send in my DSA upper and they would remove it. I sent it in yesterday, I will keep everyone posted...

Do you have a .223 or 5.56 chambered barrel?

Midway USA only has one offering for "AR-15" and doesn't suggest that is is chamber specific and does not say that it will only work in one or other.

CMMG is specific to 5.56 chambers as stated on CMMG's web site regardless of Midway dropping the ball on correct information.
Chance you take when buying from a distruibutor.

To clarify, it is a DS Arms ZM4 upper which is chambered in 5.56...

Then it could be a tight chamber or a too large chamber adapter. More than likely a tolerance stacking issue.

The collar of CMMG unit I have got stuck on the lugs in the barrel extension of at least four 5.56 uppers that I tried for the first 50 or so insertion/removal times of use.  There is a nice little groove and several little nicks around the collar where the collar got worn in.  The chamber adapter portion of the unit had no issues.

Not legal advice, MHO, YMMV, etc.

ETA: In response to a question, it took some serious jerking on the charging handle to get the conversion unit out till the collar gradually wore in.

SecondAmend, no issues removing the CMMG unit from your upper? How did you get it out?

Try a wooden dowell.

For what it's worth I just got a CMMG .22 cal conversion for my DSA upper as well. It is the stainless steel model but not the one with the lugs.

I used it for a few hundred rounds this weekend with no problems. Both clean and dirty it popped right out. Just as easy as a bolt carrier group.

Point being its probably not a tolerance stacking issue, nor is it a DSA arms issue.

Good luck.

Update...
I spoke to Josh from CMMG today. He told me that they were able to remove the kit, but my DSA barrel was out of spec and that they could modify the chamber adapter on my kit for $40. I expressed my concern that after spending $40 more I would have over $300 invested in the base model kit at that point. He said one of the techs was working on a new adapter that fit my barrel, but it was not finished. He called back a couple hours later and told me that the new adapter fit perfectly and he test fired 75 rounds through it with no issues. At this point everything will be back in the mail by tomorrow at the latest. I should have time to get back out to the range immediately thereafter, so stay tuned. I may even do a video for my channel.

How would you know it's not a tolerance issue or a DSA chamber issue? Only way to know that is to measure both the chamber and the chamber adapter.

send upper back to DSA and have them fix their issue.  I hope you didn't pay the extra $40.

I will say that cmmg's customer service is top notch as I just dealt with them last week because of an issue with my 22 conversion.

I did not have to pay the $40, they had another chamber adapter they were working on that fit my chamber, so they just swapped it out. My fear was that I would spend more money to send it to DSA and they would say that their work was to spec and the conversion was off. I didnt want to spend weeks waiting and paying to ship back and forth with no resolution. Regardless, CMMG stepped up and hopefully saved the day and got a customer for life, not to mention my group of friends that are wanting conversions, but are waiting to see how this pans out. So at this point, kudos to CMMG!

Conclusion:

I got my upper and new conversion kittrack from CMMG today. I must say they were a pleasure to deal with and solved my problem with no issues. Shipping back was a little slow, but eh I can't complain. They had another kit in the shop they said they were working that fit my chamber, so that is the one I ended up getting. I found this to be kind of odd since they were so confident that it was my barrel that was out of spec, if everything coming out of that factory is exactly in spec how did this one come about? Either way, the kit I did receive ran 150+ rounds today at 100% so I am completely satisfied and would recommend this kit and company to anyone. Thanks CMMG!

"Everything" coming out of any factory is not always in spec. There will always be differences.

This is one of the reasons I like to have the 22 kit that will be used in my hands as I machine the barrel to fit
the differences.

I started off with a kit like yours, added a cheap DSA stripped upper + CMMG barrel = 1000's rounds of dedicated fun.
