I have looked around...so if I am repeating questions.....sorry.

I need to remove the barrel nut to install a free float rail.  Before I buy more tools I want to confirm some assumptions.  What upper vice is compatible with a CMMG upper or easiest to use?

1.  Brownells / Bushmaster clamp style - I assume the dust cover has to be removed to use with a clamp style vice block.  Does the gas deflector come off separately or does the entire dust cover need to be removed?  I also assume the internal block cylinder will not fully insert without the dust cover removed due to the interference with the duct cover pin housing as a result of the barrel set back into the receiver..
2. DPMS style  - Does the block fit into the upper or does the barrel interfere because it is set back into the upper receiver?

Thanks for any advice.

I use the clam shell type action block. I did have to dremel a section out for the shell deflector. Took about five minutes. You will also need to drill a 1/2" hole in the end of the receiver insert.
Tools are the same as any other AR and cutting the block did not affect use with a standard receiver.

Im about to do the same thing as the OP.  Can you clarrify the need for drilling the hole or is it so easy I'll figure it out.

The T shaped receiver insert needs the 1/2" hole drilled in the chamber end. The is allow the .22 barrel chamber to slide inside the 1/2" hole.

Thanks Dave.  I will take a stab at modifying the block this weekend.
