I am looking at a CMMG M4 LE .22 LR Evolution 16 inch Upper w/F Marked front sight base.
Add: SS Bolt Upgrade Add: Mil-Spec Anodized Finish Add: SS Go/No Go Collar Add: Bolt Hold Open Actuator It is listed as having an Anti Jam Charging Handle While reading on the Brownells Site in the Ratings area I found some problems listed with CMMG Plastic Charging Handles breaking. My First question would be, is the Charging Handle still made of plastic on the new production models? I called CMMG several times today. The line was busy, of no one picked up. I left a message after probably an hour of trying. They did call me back, however the wife had already dragged me off to Raymondville for Cat Fish. So I missed the call. I will try again Monday. I had planned to asked about the Charging Handle, and also when do they expect the steel lipped magazines to be ready to go out. I was planning on getting 2 or 3 magazines to start with. I sure would hate to get 3 plastic lip ones, and have the steel lipped ones come out a week later. If the charging handle that comes with it is still plastic, I will probably have them change it out for a Mil Spec one. For Info: My lower is an early CMMG that I have had on the shelf for years waiting on my next build project. I have a US GI 6 position Stock and a Mil Spec lower parts set in the mail. Along with a set of Yankee Hill Extended take down pins. I will probably use a Colt removable Carry Handle for a sight, at least for the moment. Anyone have any advice on my upper choice. Good, Bad, or would do something different?? Bob |

There have been a few problems with the charging handles. You only hear the bad.
I have 4 or 5 and No Problems. You are making a good choice for your upper. New metal feed lip mags will be ready to go very soon. Awaiting Springs to actuate the BHOA, weaker springs are available... Call and talk with product support on Monday, they can nail times down better than I can... Good Luck, Dave S |
| I have been using the plastic charging handles for some time now. I have some rifles with scopes and you have to reach around a bit to work the CH which means you might get a sideways flex on them as you dodge the scope. If they were weak I would have broken them. So far I have NOT broken one. I can't say if the few people who broke them flexed them too much being rough on them or if they just got a bad handle. Anything can go wrong with any part. But, as a whole I don't believe there have been that many bad handles out there. I trust them completely, as much as any other part. Anything can and will break in time. But remember, you only hear about the ones that break. No one complains about the good ones. |
| I have the upper you want with said plastic charge handle. The only time I can see a problem is if you tried to draw the charge handle back in a (magpul) tactical way. The .22LR upper bolt doesn't use the standard buffer, it has it's own built in so it's not that hard to pull back. |

CMMG designed the anti jam charging handle, more to address the issues with other manufacturers problem kits to keep empties out of the charging handle. To make the same charging handle out of aluminum would have cost the user over $50. So the nylon/polymer was used to keep it affordable.
I've never had empties in my charging handle from a CMMG kit or dedicated upper with or without the anti jam. Dave N |
