do dedicated .22 uppers need special hammers or springs?

not really.   Some have issues with notched hammers so rounded hammers are recomended.

No, but a rounded hammer is said to help with function.

A rounded hammer is recommended but I wouldn't change it until I tried the upper. I have both typ hammers and all mine work fine with either type.

There have been issues with Notched Hammers but in some cases they will work just fine.
It depends on the fit of the upper and lower and the actual hammer itself. There's sticky in
the index above and on page 11 is a list of the combinations that work and some that don't.
The list is as far up to date as the information I have... My post number 2390.
Good Luck,
Dave

I have great luck with the Plain Jane rounded DPMS style hammers. With two stage triggers I have one that will function perfectly (on an Armalite lower) while another (RRA) that looks about the same refuses to work properly. You really have to try the upper on the lower and see how it goes. Worse case you may need to swap out your hammer. As The Shadow pointed out, try it first and see how it goes.

thanks guys I'm looking into a .22 trainer that mimics the trigger pull and feel of my ar-10 but will cost much less.
