You put a 9mm barrel on the upper.  You can also put the gas deflector and short ejection port cover on it if you want.  That's about it.  You may, if it bothers you, also plug the gas tube hole in the front of the upper, but that's not needed.  It really is as simple as just putting the right barrel on the upper.

I was just wondering if there was a hole you had to drill in the upper to put the spring for the plastic shell deflector and if you could put that deflector
on a standard AR upper that has the deflector cast on it..
I should have been more clearer on my question..

 Thanks

OK, answered my question..Thought someone might have set up the plastic 9mm deflector on a standard AR upper..

you don't actually need the deflector... it was made to deflect gas, not spent cases.

ETA quite a few people out there omit the gas deflector...

NOT MY PICTURE

The gas deflector sits on a standard port cover door pin along with the shortened door.  It doesn't take any additional work to install it, nor any special adaptations to the upper.  And as noted, it's not needed, either.

Proof reading is fundamental too...  Leaving out a word isn't a good thing.

Thanks GH...

Never looked under that plastic adapter..........

Just thought this would be a good discussion....

So the only difference between a 9mm and .223 upper is the deflector and shorter door? And these parts are fully interchangeable?
Thanks,

Yes, and yes.  Except...  You don't need the forward assist for a 9mm upper because I don't think anyone makes a properly notched bolt for the Colt system, and you don't need a gas tube hole in a 9mm upper.  These things don't hurt, but they aren't necessary.  You can simply pull the barrel off of any standard upper, and put a 9mm barrel on it - no gas tube to mess with!  Or you can buy a purpose-made 9mm upper that lacks FA or gas tube hole.  It is up to you.

Thanks, I totally overlooked the forward assist.
