| It'll blow some carbon crud and possibly tiny bullet shavings up every time you fire it, but it shouldn't affect operation. You might want to consider tapping the gas tube hole for an appropriate small screw and plugging the hole that way. A small, short hex socket-head screw with some loctite would plug the hole and could be made not to show above the barrel profile. |

I wanted to sell the barrel and pick up a dedicated 1/16 setup but no such luck. If you haven't already, I would check with Spike's Tactical. They don't list just barrels on their website, but they have always been easy to work with, and will often set up stuff that's not necessarily listed on the website. It wouldn't surprise me if they would cut one of their 1/16 .22 barrels to whatever length you want. Quoted:

Just my opinion, but I see this as having more potential to cause problems than just leaving things alone. What if the tap doesn't leave a clean cut inside the barrel? You will end up shaving more lead from the bullet, likely causing accuracy issues. Leave it as it is, and it should be just fine. If the OP is really concerned, get a low-profile gas block and install it upside down, or block the hole in some similar manner. Besides, you never know - you may just want to go back to shooting .223 through it some day. |

I gave Spikes a call a few weeks ago. For them to cut me a 7" barrel its close to $300. I dont mind getting the barrel from them but wanted to sell this one to kinda justify the purchase. I still have to get the .22 BCG from them which is an additional $200.
As for the barrel now, I have a low profile block that came with it from Rainier- didnt think about installing it upside down. I really didnt want to ruin this barrel but I dont see it selling any time soon and im itching to get the .22 running. |

What's the twist rate of the barrel you have. 1:9" will be much more workable than
1:7" in that short of a barrel. I can't believe you couldn't sell the barrel you have. A few months ago people were going to war with each other to get their hands on a 7 1/2". I'd leave it set up for gas. If you decide you don't like it as a 22 it'd be easier to sell the whole upper. But that's just me. I wouldn't expect to win any medals with accuracy but at 20-25 yards, you should be able to find an ammo that would keep hits in the black. Clint Beyer may have an 8" barrel and dedicated collar like I tested in the 22 sticky. It may be less expensive and it's very accurate. Remember, the 22 barrel sets back farther so it looks like 6 1/2". Good Luck, Spec |
| Thanks guys for all the info and the link. Its a 1 in 8, I had a few offers but they were real low ball's so I didnt let it go. Its really just going to be a toy at this length, plinking at cans or punching holes in 10 yard targets. I didnt think about the barrel sitting back further when its dedicated, still trying to figure out what I want to do. I wouldnt mind selling the whole package and picking up something completely new. |
