I know that 1x9 would be better for a .22 round, but would it work decent in a 1x7 say at 50-75 yards?

If you are hoping for any kind of real accuracy, you'll need a dedicated upper.

I would just be looking to hit steel plates/paper at that range

My 6920 with a 1/7 hits 4" plates everytime at 50 yards.  I don't use a conversion kit as a hunting weapon or target gun where I need it to shoot bugholes so they work fine for me.

Its all about finding the right ammo.

I am currently building up a very extensive .22lr ammo report using dozens of different .22lr ammo and my conversion kit. Thus far Aguila 38gr Super Extra Hollow points has performed the best in all of my uppers.

Below is a bit of the data I have gathered. I've only had the time to test 2 ammo types in the White Oak 1/7 Twist barrel but both performed better than the Colt 1/12 Twist upper I have. Best group I have gotten to date is with the White Oak 1/7 Twist barrel.

The average of 2.07 MOA for .22lr in the conversion is plenty good for me. I started my 4 group test with a clean bore. By the fourth group MOA had imporved by almost 1 MOA to 1.621. Because this ammo is the most accurate I have tested it has a above average bullet weight, its hollow point, and has a very good velocity it is my preferred .22lr hunting round.

I am very meticulous about gathering my data and keeping things consistent. But for whatever reason my 16” WOA 1-7 Twist barrel got equal velocities to my 18” CMMG 1-7 with the Super Extra.

That's true for any .22LR firearm.

If you want to use it for plinking and 3" or so groups at 50 yards are acceptable then get the conversion kit.

If you want to shoot accurately or hunt squirrels then a dedicated upper is what you need.

I haven't been as meticulous as Tech-Com and my AR's that I use the most with my Ciener conversion kit have red dots on them with no magnification.  I'd say my groups are about twice the size as what Tech-Com shows in his photos.  My best groups were with the Aquilla SSS 60 gr sub sonics in the 1x9 barrel. But those short little cases keep jamming up between the charging handle and the bolt.

But they are a lot of fun to shoot and a cheap way to let the kids blast away with the AR15.  My conversion kit paid for itself in ammo savings on it's first range trip.

This is a great post for 1:7" use. Best Groups I've fired have been with Aguila SSS 60gr.
Anything can be made to work with the right ammo.

Good Luck,

SSS performed ok in the 1-8 twist and horribly in the 1-12 twist.. However, the 1-7 Twist may be just right for it. I only have a single 25yard group with this ammo through the 16" Woa 1-7 twist upper of mine, but it turned out to be great at 1.603 MOA. I plan to do 50yd grouping test with it next, but have been concentrating on rounds to use for hunting, mostly hollow points.

The SSS round is about the only sub-sonic round to cycle the conversion kit. I however have found it to be a very poor hunting round. I've only been able to recover 1 of 3 rabbits I have hit with this round, and the one I did recover was still able to run 15 yards. It fell dead at the thicket line. After examining the wound and comparing it to wounds caused by the Super Extra rounds I abandoned it as a small game hunting round. I'm just not going to shoot animals with a round that will allow the animal to escape even when I get a good solid vital hit on them.

I had hoped to make use of the SSS as a hunting round due to the low noise signature. However, I determined I would bring home more game with a flatter shooting round that packed more punch and actually killed what I was shooting at. You really have to know the SSS round well and the drop to use it well as a hunting round, because the round is gonna traverse 7" vertically between 0 and 100 yards, that's a lot when trying to hit a target smaller than 3". You really have to range your target and know your ballistics to hit a squirrel or rabbit sized target.

That being said, the SSS would probably be one of the better if not one of the best close range .22lr self-defense rounds due to its ability to reach the vitals on larger targets. I've done clay testing and it has been the deepest penetrating .22lr I have tested to date. However since a lot of pistols won't stablize it and why carry a full sized rifle in .22lr for defense when you could have a 5.56 .etc the really only good use for it would be a round to use with a conversion kit and night vision or if you are hunting in shtf .etc and can't afford to give away your position.

Here is a rabbit wound from the SSS. Exit wound and Entry wound are the same sizes. It went through it like a pencil poking holes in paper. The Super Extra rounds have been much more effective at killing small game. Click to see skinned rabbit and wound
