I have a ST-22 upper and I got it to run like clock work. A little polishing here. a little chambering there and so on. I had recently had the barrel off (to ramp the breech) and I went to install it back. Their was no gas tube to align the barrel nut to the receiver. I used a drill bit of the right diameter and tightened the nut so that everything aligned up.
My question is: should I install a gas tube and its roll pin back into the upper. I know that it would not be functional but it should lock the front part of the hand guard from turning but it would fill the cavity somewhat in the upper receiver. May be even preventing possible jams and what not. Is this theory sound or a waste of a $20 (Tube and roll pin)? |

Waste of time.
The hand guards index off the indents in the barrel nut so they won't rotate when properly installed, and taking up space in the charging handle area is likely to introduce more jams, not less. (If a casing ejects upwards, its going to jam regardless of the presence of a gas tube or not) |
