im thinking i want to order a RRA upper in .40, what do i have to do to an extra lower i have for it? is there a big difference?

Lowers are identical, provided you're using a magblock. Some pistol caliber carbines come with specialized lowers made specifically to take a particular pistol or SMG magazine, but a regular lower and a magblock will work too.
