I just got an old 22 with what is likely a shot out barrel.  I went looking and found that Brownells sells 22 caliber liners, as well as the tools to do it.  It then dawned on me that this might be applicable to AR's - take an old, shot out barrel, drill it with the 8mm drill, and install the liner right up to the breach face.  At the chamber the hole would open up to 9mm, so that .5mm gap would beed to be filled with AcraGlass or soft solder.  But if we're talking 22 caliber, would that really be a problem?  The liners are quite reasonable ($24?), and have the proper 1:16 twist.  They even have them in 1:20 for .22 short - I think a Class III gallery gun would be awesome.

On the bad side, lots of AR barrels are chrome lined; I hear they're a pain to drill.

On the good side, just run the liner to the chamber,  re-chamber in .223, and use a complete, un-modified conversion. Function should be fine and accuracy should approach modern dedicated uppers.

The late Kurt, of Kurt'sKustom Firearms did this,  well, not relines, but 1:16 rimfire barrels with a .223 chamber. He used lugless barrel extensions to prevent use with a .223 bolt. Accuracy is said to be good.

I thought about that, but I couldn't really see the advantage - if you are going to re-line, why not just go the whole was and eliminate the adapter?

I originally had the idea to use one of those "barrels in the white" from the parts kits, but then I thought about using shot out/scrap barrels.
