Finally, after two months of waiting, I finished my 9mm build.  Particulars are:

Rock River stripped lower bought from a local gun shop
Armalite LPK
DD receiver extension tube (buffer tube) and spring.
Slash's Q buffer
Hahn dedicated 9mm mag conversion block
Brownell's 9mm hammer
Complete 16" Rock River 9mm mid-length upper (non-ramped bolt carrier)
Magpul MOE buttstock and pistol grip (waiting for the Magpul MOE mid-length handguards to become available)
MaTech BUIS
Metal Form and C Products 20 and 32 round magazines (Metal Form 20 round mag shown in photos)

The cut down port cover and plastic  brass deflector will be replaced with a standard port cover when it comes in.

Late today I received from Brownell's a set of non-rotating hammer/trigger pins that will be installed tomorrow.

I took it to the local indoor range today to function test and sight in at 25 yards.  200 rounds of WW 115 FMJ and not a single malfunction.  When I concentrated groups were approx 1.5" for five shots from a front rest only position.  I am very pleased with the build.  It is a fun carbine to shoot.  I'm glad I went with Slash's Q buffer as it seems to work very well and tames the recoil, as if a 9mm needs taming.  I tested 4 mags, one each Metal Form 20 and 32 round mags and one each C Products 20 and 32 round mags and all fed/functioned fine and the bolt hold open worked perfectly with each of them.

The fit of the Rock River upper and lower are perfect!  No slop/play whatsoever.  Just a hint of force is required to close the upper on the lower and insert the rear take-down pin.  I find that impressive considering they were not bought as a matched set.  A hat tip to Rock River Arms.

So far I couldn't be more pleased with the build.

Thank you.

My intention is to keep this 9mm carbine as simple as possible.  Other than a TriTech Training/Mission First! sling, arguably the finest sling I have ever used (http://www.tttmissionfirst.com/tras.html) it will wear no accessories, no lasers, and, for the time being, no light, although I may add a small Surefire light at a later date.  The intent is for the carbine to be a "Toss in the jeep/get bumped around a lot/go anywhere" carbine.  The rear sight, in that respect will likely get replaced with something considerably more stout but I happened to have the MaTech on hand for now.

Ok, first off that's a great Zevon avatar, "My Ride's Here" is a GREAT album.  But even more so, you've done almost exactly what I've been planning to do w/my nine millie when I get it put together!  What do you think of the middie length instead of the more common CAR?  I would really like a dissie length but the mid is close enough, I want to run that w/one of the LWD Glock lowers and probably a Daniel Defense rear sight.  Anything you'd suggest I should keep an eye out for when using the RRA upper?  Any particular lower receiver packs and such?  Once again, wicked little weapon.

I chose the mid length purely for aesthetic purposes.  I think they look better than the 16" barreled carbine, well and they do give additional purchase when shooting, or more room for accessories.

This is my first experience building a 9 so I can't offer a lot in terms of experience but I am very pleased with the dedicated Hahn block and the "as received" RRA upper combo.  So far I have approximately 700 rounds through it without a single malfunction using Metalform and C Products magazine (I mainly use either brand's 20 round mags).  My only other suggestion would be to go with a 9mm hammer, doing so as to not have to worry about ramping the bolt.  When I first decided to build a 9 I did the research and found that other folks builds were allover the map as to what to do i.e., standard bolt, ramped bolt, standard hammer, DPMS hammer, 9mm hammer, RRA block, Spikes block, VM-Hytech block, Hahn block, etc.  I chose my parts based on the best info I could find that seemed to work consistently along with RRA advise and came up with the combo I did based on that research i.e., most seem to agree the Hahn dedicated block is a great block... using an unramped bolt, be sure to use a 9mm hammer?  When I first started my research I had the illusion that I could use a non-dedicated block and swap uppers back and forth (5.56 upper/9mm upper) but soon realized that was causing others more problems than it was worth so decided on a dedicated 9mm lower and went from there.

Thanks for the comment on my avatar.  Not many recognize it for who it is.  Warren is my all time favorite musician, not to mention what an inspiration to me he was/is.

The RRA complete upper (with bolt & charging handle) was $500 direct from RRA.  The Hahn dedicated block was $185 from Brownell's, the 9mm hammer was $25, also from Brownell's, and Slash's 9Q buffer was something like $75 direct from him (and worth every dollar).  The rest was standard "chose your lower parts and rear sight" from the manufacturers I listed.  That is, perhaps, a little more cost than one could build a 9mm AR for but I wanted a 9mm that worked right off the bat with no fiddling and that is exactly what I got.  To me it was worth the cost of admission.  I have had not a single problem so far (700 rounds).  I use Metalform and C Products mags and both work perfectly and I have not experienced a single failure to hold the bolt open on the last round, no failures to feed, extract, etc.

Thanks for the info, I will follow your advice and do a TON of research before making any buys.  I'm considering trying to actually put together a dissapator style upper, if I could only find the proper barrel assembly.  As for Zevon, he's one of the few musicians I've ever regretted not getting to see live... Hell, I started reading up on the African bush wars after hearing "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner"!!
