I am trying to decide on what buffer to buy.  I am kind of confused about the blowback thing.  I read heavy is better but then wont it be harder for it to push back and eject the caseing.  Also what spring should i use?  Is the stock RRA 9mm buffer any good?  What spring does RRA use in their complete 9mm AR?

I use a Rock River Arms 9mm buffer––it's only $25.  You can continue to use the same spring that came with your lower.

What kind of upper/lower combination are you going with?

I couldn't be happier with the way mine operates.

I like the heavy buffers with xtra power spring......softens recoil and smooths out the action during firing for mine.

I have the best results with a Wolff extra power spring and a long 9mm Spikes buffer.
My second choice would be Slash's Q buffer but it will cost more than the Spikes.

10.5 RRA upper with their quad rail no sights, i am going to make it close to 16inches when done
Lone wolf lower with 33 round glock mags
magpul od green furniture
eotech xps

i need to place an order with spikes.  i talked to Garret over their the other day for a minute.  They seem like good people.  i forgot to ask him about the buffers.

I have two.  Both work great.  I only use semi-auto, and I have tried them with barrels in 16", 14.5", and 10.5" length - flawless function with a standard carbine spring.

Oddly, on my 10.5" pistol, a 9mm RRA buffer and a buffer spacer make it feel like it has less recoil than the ST-9X does (maybe from less moving mass?), but carbine builds with stocks feel the same with either one.  I like them and would use them in all of my 9mm builds if they were cheaper.  I get a lot less blowback crap in the internals of the builds that use the ST-9X.

Finished my 9mm build today and did a 200 round function fire with Slash's 9 Q buffer and it worked perfectly, not so much as a single malfunction in 200 rounds.

I use this buffer.  It works great, I am usually shooting reloaded 147 gr subsonic with a can.

To the OP:  You need weight in the buffer to slow the bolt velocity.  On a blowback there is no locking mechanism  - the gun just relies on the sping and the inertia of the bolt and buffer to keep it closed until presure subsides in the chamber.  So a heavier buffer helps reduce blowback and it also helps prevent the buffer from coming back to fast and slamming into the rear of the buffer tube.  So you're right, it does slow the bolt, but that's a good thing.
