Any ideas what the diff. would be between a Tac Sol 16" dedicated upper and a 20" SP1 (1/12 ")upper with a Ceiner conv. kit |

Before his untimely death, Kurt's Kustom Firearms offered dedicated upper featuring 1:16 RF barrels with a .223 chamber reamed byut no locking lugs on the barrel extension, for use with unmodified conversion bolts. They're said to have pretty good accuracy.
People have done similar dedicated builds with 1:12 barrels, plugging the gas port or block , again, with reports of pretty good accuracy. I'm unsure if SpecOps has such an upper in his archive, but if you do, you're 1 conversion kit away from finding out. If it doesn't satisfy you, Ballistic Advantage offers some good barrels, which, together with a collar to replace the chamber insert of your bolt, gets you a complete "standard" dedicated upper. |
| i think the biggest detriment to accuracy in conversions is the large jump the bullet makes before it contacts rifling. add to that the faster twist and it goes downhill from there. i bet the 12" twist would be better than the 7-9" twist but probubly not so much as to be close to the tacsol , spikes and other dedicated 22`s. |

20 to 30% toward a dedicated upper would be my estimate. An A1-1:16" twist is as close as it gets to dedicated
without being one. If you're not a bench shooter going for small groups, you'll never really realize the difference. I have several A1 Uppers and they're a blast to shoot with conversions. Good Luck, S-13 |

Foolish me. During the panic I found a NOS surplus 1-12 chrome lined barrel. The plan was to use it to build a upper for .223 lighter bullets and for a .22 conversion. Someone offered me a good price on it and I let it go. Kicked myself in the butt several times for that. I have not been able to find another one since. There were some 16" 1-12 barrels being sold here last year but I missed those too.
The conversion in a 1-12 barrel can shoot pretty well. Not a target gun but for general day-to-day plinking fun they work darn well. |

I pretty well agree with theskuh.
These are from my 5 shot group tests of a 1:12 with a Spike's Conversion: See my Post # 519 about 1/2 way down the following page.... http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=15&t=441890&page=2 My best 150 round Federal Bulk group was 1-1/2" with the 1:12. I would imagine the 10/22 would do an inch or under. I don't have any 10/22 groups to post but I agree with 1/2" for 5 shot groups at 25 yards, atleast with my 10/22 bull barrel.. Spec |
