alright so i'm debating the idea of getting a 22LR Conversion kit after i went through about 400 rounds last shoot and i kept hearing chuching, chuching, everytime the buffer caught my bolt, instead of the blessed sound of joy ahah lol. so i wanted to hear what everyones thought of the following and if any is preferrable, also what can i expect for accuracy, i will probably be using this on my varmint AR variant with a 22' barrel free floated tube and a 1X9 twist rate, my choices are below, can anyone give me a run down of pro's and con's of these items, choices are as follows
CMMG .22LR conversion kit Ciener 22.LR Conversion kits Spikes .22LR conversion kit i have also read through multiple pages of the sticky on the top of the forum, but still had questions as to which conversion was reccommeded, also will this affect my performance and wear of my upper reciever differently than the standard .223, i have heard good and bad things from the local gun shop folks about their OPINIONS on conversion kits verses dedicated uppers, and as i dont have an extra 400-500 sitting around for a dedicated upper, i thought the conversion could be the next best thing. Please help. |

They all work about the same. They all use the same mags. Some have better factory support, some have none. Accuracy is a function of ammo and barrel, not conversion kit. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=15&t=441890 Big +1. I had two uppers, both 1-9, a 24" and a 16". Spike's kit, and Federal Blue box bulk ammo. The 16" grouped about ... 4-6 inches at 25 yards! Meanwhile the 24" grouped 10 shots at about 1-1.5 inches at 25 yards, which is as good as my Marlin Mod 60 shooting the same ammo. I specifically went with a kit so that I could practice drills with my exact rifle configuration. Although, i will add that I really really want a dedicated .22 upper now. When you get a kit, buy as many different 50 round boxes of 22 as you can find (I know that's hard to do right now) and simply spend the day at the range determining which ammo your upper likes. |

on another note, is the spikes o-rings really provide any benefit? the reason i ask is i'm between the CMMG and Spikes but the CMMG can be found a little cheaper and with more mags, thanks It has two on it, and when I switched it between uppers, the first ring was gone. Heh. I believe the reasoning behind them is to keep the chamber a bit cleaner, gases won't blow past the rings. |
|
The O-Rings do take a little care and caution but do make conversions in some uppers
fit better. They also provide a seal, sometimes with the front and sometimes only the rear touches. They help keep the chamber adapter in alignment which I feel gives a tiny improvement in accuracy. You can buy spare O-Rings from spike's. I have some but have yet to use them. The Spike's conversion is Plated so Less lube is needed. The Stainless Steel CMMG is easy to clean compared to their standard conversion. They are very similar to the Ciener. I have some of each and they all work fine..... It's up to you. I have 15,000 rounds of 22 through 1 AR, no damage yet. With .223 / 5.56 the barrel would be pretty well history in that many rounds. It's still like new.... Spec |

FYI: Palmetto State Armory currently has the CMMG .22 adapter with 3 mags for $179.95 Mags are usually $20-25, so it's a good deal. Link: http://palmettostatearmory.com/sp6.php |
| ok with that deal, the only question i have is whats the cleaning like ont he ones which are not chrome plated, is it really that big of an issue? i dont mind running it wetter and cleaning throughly for the saving of 60-70+ dollars! what does everyone else think |

That chuching sound stays there though. Its actually louder than the round. i was talking about chuching $$$$ just in case you didn't realize ![]() Well in that case, its the sound of cash going back into my wallet. haha, nah the sound I was talking about was the bolt sliding back and forth on the rail and the sound of the spring in the stock moving around. The .22lr are so quiet you hear all the functions of the rifle. |

As for kits, if you stay away from JAC (Ceiner) you should be fine. I have two JAC kits and the work with anything but Remington Thunderbolts. They have been low maintenance, I put 2000 rounds through one kit to see if it would fail, and it didn't. The 1x9 barrels I have are not very accurate, 5-6" groups at 25 yards. I do have a surplus 1x12 barreled A1 upper that shoots well. If your looking to practice or train with your AR, the kits are great. If your looking for a tack driver you'll need a dedicated upper. |

They changed the deal since I looked last time. |
| i started out with a spikes conversion and was happy with it. later i started wanting a dedicated upped so i ordered the collar for the dedicated bolt and a 22 barrel from spikes and now its even more fun. i didnt have the money to drop all at once on the upper but being able to upgrade my conversion into an upper was nice. i like to shoot steel at about 200 yards and with the dedicated barrel the bullet hits the steel faster than it did with my 223 barrel. i think the faster twist of the 223 barrel was slowing the bullet down. anyhow there is my two cents, |

That in itself makes easier clean up. I would think the stailess would be the same. My non plated kit from Ciener has to be wet to run and gums up a lot quicker. It does take more effort to clean. |
| well i'm working on a collecting all my parts for my first build i'm hopefully going to start come the begining of 2010 but depending on BCM, and the stock i may have to wait, plus finance issues are always an issue, asked santa for plenty of specific parts this year aha so hopefully the jolly old man (fiance-dont worry she doesnt resemble santa) will put me on the nice list. my build ideas are on my other posts here |

CDNN has a deal going on the stainless CMMG conversion with a couple mags for less than $200. If you don't want the maximum in accuracy, just the maximum in ammo savings, go with the conversion rather than the dedicated upper. You will not damage your upper. +1 on the CMMG stainless. I just got one and it worked perfectly out of the box. |
|
My wife is a little upset at me, cause I pulled the pin on the Palmetto State CMMG deal, then ordered the stainless one from CDNN as well. I figure one for me, one for the kids, right? Anyway, the regular, parkerized, CMMG adapter is butter smooth. I was worried I'd have to smooth it out, but it's a very nice piece of kit. Still...in for a penny, in for a pound. Anyone have a beater 1:12 barrel they'd like to get some Christmas dough for |

I now feel like a dumbass. I ordered mine from midway (due here very soon) I could have saved the cost of two mags. DOH!! Oh well I will be saving in ammo costs. I bought a Ciener kit back when Midway had them for $130. I've bought some CMMG and BDM mags since then. Been very happy with all of them. |
