So I've noticed that on my TacSol upper the bolt doesn't close fully when it's dirty (after a few hundred rounds). I imagine this can cause OOBs and FTF's. I've been lucky so far in that I've only had FTF's.
Today after a long range session, I've played around with the dirty bolt and found that it's the extractor that gets gummed up and doesn't let the bolt close home fully (feels like it's getting hung up on the rim of the cartridge). If I nudge the bolt forward manually I can get it to close and function for one cycle. A quick spot of lubrication and working the extractor for a bit seemed to remedy the problem for a short while until it started to happen again. Also I think this is common on most 22lr's but the lead just gets caked on everything in this gun and seems to be what gums up the extractor. I'm really not sure how one would remedy this other than cleaning the gun thoroughly every couple hundred rounds. I haven't found a quick way to get the lead off the bolt parts, but an automatic toothbrush works wonderfully for the hard to reach areas on the bolt breech face. The lead gets caked on there and gets compressed and hammered into by the bolt cycling. Makes it an extra pain to get off. Anyway, food for thought. |
| yea 22 ammo can be pretty dirty. ive had pretty good luck with the federal bulk pack stuff from walmart, cci and ww, dont know what your shooting but you should be getting more than a couple hundred rounds before its starts malfunctioning because of residue buildup. i was out yesterday with my brothers familly, there not shooters but they learned pretty quick. went thru close to 800 rounds in my tacsol and had no failures of any kind. one thing not to do with rimfire guns is over oiling .this will cause fast build up of residue and can damage ammo because it can penetrate the case and cause the ammo to go bad. |

If the upper is new this may be part of the problem. As mentioned, over lubing or
certain powders will cause it too. Any conversion or dedicated upper should go 500 to a thousand rounds before it needs cleaning. It all depends on the bullets / powder, lube and how well the bolt assembly is broken in. It could also depend on the humidity to a certain extent. Good Luck, Spec Automatic tooth brush, Fantastic Idea. |

1,000 rounds should have it broken in. How is accuracy? Getting a lot of chamber
blow by should show up in accuracy. Have you got any of the cases to look for any bulging? I can't think of any other reason why 200 rounds would foul up the operation of the extractor. Unless it's the extractor itself. Even then It shouldn't be all that dirty. Spec |

I think it's me most of the time, but I'll get 1" groups at 50 yards sometimes, and other times it'll spread to random 4-5" spread, or I'll have a random 5" spread with a whole lot of holes clustered at about 1". The cases that go off all look fine (no bulges or anything funny). I'll take some pictures next weekend when I dirty it up again, maybe they'll show what's going on. I also gotta quit being so neurotic and cleaning the thing the minute I get home from the range |

I clean whatever I shoot as soon as I get home normally too. Never thought of it but maybe some of the recent Federals have used a different powder because of the shortages. I heard somebody at the range bitching about that for whatever caliber they were shooting. That the bullets they had recently bought fired dirtier than crap. They even mentioned the powder change they suspected had been made. Just a Thought. Spec PS: I have days that my groups are crappy too. It depends on how much stress I need to get out. It helps if I just spray the target with 50 rounds before I start trying to group. BDM's 50 round drum works well for the stress.
