I have the drop in conversion for my m4 I took it to the rang for the 2nd time and I would say I put maybe 400 rounds down rang I made the mistake of after about 50 rounds I switch back to shooting 223 and blow my barrel. My mistake! I have gotten a new barrel and I am scarred as crap to run the cmmg conversion I know now the do a good cleaning after using it but my thing is the gas tube will it get clogged using 22lr.? And if so what are some of your ways to clean your m4 after running the conversion?
Thanks. |

After going to the rang that day I broke my my m4 down and did my cleaning when I was done I held the upper up to the light and notice a black ring in the area were the front sight post is. I used every cleaning product I could get my hands on and still could not get the black out so after trying that I took it to a gun smith and told him what had happen. “ I was sighting in my EOTECH with 5 round groups of 22lr once I had my zero I then switch to grouping to get my zero with American eagle 5.56 ammo the first round was ok and printed on target but the 2nd round was EXTREAMLY LOAD and a black puff of smoke came out the front end “ he then held the upper up and looked down the barrel and said “ your barrel is shoot” he said it could have been a squib load or because I did not clean my barrel after shooting 22lr. But it is not bulged or split open but you can tell that there is chunks missing form the chrome lined bore. I don’t think it was a squib round only because the first round printed on target. So that led me to believe it was from the 22lr. or bad barrel?
Sorry for the lack of info the first time and for not getting back to you guys sooner Got to love work! |
| It'd be interesting to push a new clean dry patch down the barrel with a dewy cleaning rod to see if the patch came out snagged looking? If the patch came out perfect I doubt if the barrel is rough. The gas port could have scuffed off some lead to leave a dark area and I wonder if the 223 round blew a primer or wasn't completely in battery to cause the smoke ect.. They make some very high tech bore scopes and it would be interesting to use one before you write off the barrel as being ruined. Personally I've been around many, many thousands of 22 rimfire rounds fired through 5.56 chrome moley and chrome lined barrels and never seen any problems. If you had an out of battery ignition with a 22 LR round and lodged a bullet in the barrel and then capped off another round I'd say you could have ruined your barrel? An OOB with a 22 rimfire does make a lot of smoke and definitely will get your attention let alone an out of battery ignition with a 223/5.56 round. |
