I'm not having any luck with a new CMMG complete upper I bought.  It seems not to like any of the ammo. I've tried in it. It just won't feed the shells from the clip into the chamber.  So far I've tried RWS match, Winchester bulk pac copper coated, CCI Velocitor.   I was wondering if anybody else is having problems with this upper from CMMG?   Oh,  I have it attached to a RRA lower with all milspec parts nothing fancy and stag arms 6 position buttstock.  I don't have and cheap bulk ammo. to try in it but I doubt it will will the cheap lead topped stuff anyway.

I don't have any 1st hand experience with the CMMG Upper. Just what others have told me. Have you got the latest one with the set screw to hold things in place? It may be adjusted incorrectly. Hope you can get it running. I've also heard that CMMG Mags don't position right to feed correctly in some combinations. You might check those ideas out.
Good Luck

I don't know if it has a set screw or not.   I guess I would have to remove the barrel to see it.  I've tried a Armilite lower and it seems to feed better with some of the ammo but still not real reliable, Also I noticed it does not like the NM trigger in the Armilte lower I guess 3.5lb pull is to light for the rimfire ammo.  I also tried a lower off of my Model 6 Stag and it seemd to feed better but it does not like the Timney competition trigger in that lower either is it also to light for the rimfire ammo but the feeding problems seem to be resolved somewhat.   I guess I'm going to have to dump more money into a new lower with a milspec trigger and hammer combo to make this upper happy, It just don't seem to be happy with the RRA at all.

Go here to see if yours has a set screw.

Another Idea would be to try a Black Dog Machine Magazine just to see if it helps with the feeding issue.

22's don't much like Light Hammer Springs.

Mine does not have that set screw. That might be the problem,  I did try the DBM clips too and they operated the same way.

Find some Federal Bulk or Federal Boxed ammo. That's all I can think of to help at this point.
Good Luck

Trouble shooting

Give the suggestions here a try. Sounds like you tried a wide enough variety of ammo, be sure to give it good buzzing. Certain trigger groups, as mentioned above can affect function. If it doesn't go on your next trip out, shoot us an email we will get a call tag to you and get it repaired or replaced.

Ok I wnet down to my local Dealer and bought a New Stag complete lower with a standard trigger group.  We took the rifle out in back of his shop and tried several types of ammo. they all work pretty well I guess the problem was the new Rock River Arms lower I was using.  For some reason the CMMG's barreled upper does not seem to like the RRA lowers.  So when I got home I tried a different RRA lower that I had a 20" RRA target barrel on and it acted the same way it just would not feed the ammo into the chamber.  So here is a heads up for all those looking at the CMMG uppers you might want to get something other than a RRA lower to pair ir up with.   I am happy now this baby really works well.  Thanks for all the help.  I bought this upper to save some money on ammo. having to buy the extra lower will make it take a little longer to pay for itself but you live and learn.

Glad it is up and going.  I wouldn't expect the incompatibility with the RRA to be widespread.  We haven't had any other reports to date.  If you are wanting to run it on your RRA we would be happy to take a look at the whole package and see if we can isolate the problem.  Let us know if there is anything else you need.

Thanks for the offer but I can use the RRA lower on some other build it gives me a reason to buy another upper of some type..... You can never have to many ARs around the house.

My Spike's seemed to run a lot better with light springs from PK.

Check your bolt release - some bolt releases interfere with bolt travel.  IIRC RRA bolt releases sometimes cause this type of problem.

YMMV

That is actually a pretty common problem. Rock River uses a notched hammer instead of the smooth round type. .22 uppers don't do well with notched hammers.

That makes sense I tried 2 of the RRA receivers and they both failed to feed the ammo.  Stag has no problem at all, my armalite and a bushmaster I tried all wored well.

jerz_subbie: Spike's reacts differently to hammer springs. I tried a Light JP with my Spike's today and it worked perfect. My Ciener's Don't seem to like them at all. Maybe CMMG is different too.
