What would make a casehead on a 17HMR semi auto bulge out toward the boltface?

Semi auto or bolt gun? In many semi auto's the back of the chamber can be a bit looser than the rest to facilitate reliability. If the chamber is tight, then it could be firing a bit out of battery.

Found cases matching your description at the range a couple months ago - a few of the .17 cases we found near one bench were bulged enough that the case would not stand straight on a level tabletop.  We never did figure it out as we don't know who was shooting or what they were shooting.  Definitely not something I've seen with .22LR or .22Mag.

ETA:  The mystery is that not all the cases were bulged - some were bulged, others looked perfectly okay.

Ya these are rounded to the max.No way these would stand straight on a level tabletop.

Ok, I miss read, I was thinking of the area forward  of the case head. If the back of the head where the mfg stamp is, is bulged then someone must have a screwed up bolt. Either some metal missing, or a head space issue?

This problem has been described at Rimfirecentral.com.  The .17 rimfires have high pressure and it causes problems.

My GUESS is over pressured rounds.

In center fires it will flatten the primer out against the bolt face, in a rimmed cartridge my guess is it can cause a bulge like you described.

Must have something to do with a particular rifle as my Anschutz .17HMR does not do that.

To large of a bolt face, to light of a spring, to light of a bolt, unsupported chamber.

Correct, the bolt guns do not see the issue or at least not as often.  From what  I've read it happens most often in 10/22 conversions or the like.

This rifles the bolt face is oversized way to much room in there with the case,i think a heavier spring might help
and the chamber is very loose. Im just going to tell him to send it back they have a lifetime warranty and he says that he
sent it back twice already but i would keep sending it back until they fix it of refund my money. Mike

Let me guess you have a Volquartsen 10/17? I sold one of these to a guy long ago, I know that he sent it back at least 3-4 times because of issues. I also know that Ruger dropped their 10/22 in .17 as unworkable.

That is the problem with the 17M2 and HMR. They don't play well with semi-autos otherwise we would of already brought it to the market.
