I'm wanting to do a 9mm build.
Can I use a regular .223 stripped upper? Or do I have to buy a RockRiver 9mm upper (with the 9mm gas deflector)? What are the cons of using a regular stripped upper? |
| Can use either one on 9mm build. For what it is worth the very first Colt 9mm's came out without the gas deflector. I have seen several post that the gas deflector provides very little in the way of gas deflection (but then thay may have been running full-auto lowers). Unless you are trying to build a replica of a Colt 9mm, you can go with what ever is availiable. |
| That deflector is a plastic part held on by the port cover door hinge pin. You can put one on ANY 5.56 or 9mm upper. The big thing about 9mm uppers is that they generally don't have a forward assist (I don't know of a 9mm bolt that has the notches for one), and they don't have a gas tube hole. The small door and case deflector are added on parts-and you can put them on the upper of your choice. |
