question.  Apparently the upper is self-contained but I know I will still need to put some type of stock and buffer tube/receiver extension on the lower receiver.  However, is a buffer and spring at all necessary if I keep this as a dedicated .22 rifle/carbine??  Thanks,  all.

You don't need a buffer, receiver extension or buffer spring for .22LR ARs. The recoil spring is contained in the bolt carrier group. Some say that if you start getting light primer strikes, you might need it because it keeps the bolt in the forward position but others have success without them. Are you planning to use an ACE adapter, side folder?
