Does anyone make one?
I figure it would be a bit more interesting than a .22 at the range.

I would love an AR in 17HMR.  I was just playing around with an old aluminum mag and the mag from my Savage 93.  The Savage 5 rounder will fit inside the AR mag, it just needs something to hold it in place, like being epoxied in.  I might try to get my hands on a 20 round mag and another couple savage mags and see what I come up with. It would be pretty kickass to have bigger mags that look like real full bodied AR mags use the same release/latch controls.

The main reason we didn't do the 17 HMR is the price of ammo. Its not very cheap to shoot..

yeah but for a groundhog/squirrel gun it would be sick.

Why not use varmint rounds in .223?

You could definately use .223. If you are planning on keeping any of the squirrel intact HMR to the head is about the biggest I would want to shoot one with.  If shooting PD it is good for the closer quieter shots before you start opening up with the center fires.

The way I see it HMR is basically a flat shooting small varmint/crow round. You are not going out there and running hundreds of rounds through your upper. So it would be a low seller and spikes was/is wise probably to stay away from it. I would use one to hunt tree squirrels/crow with since the trajectory is flat out to 125 yards and the bullet is really frangible so less likely to get away. You could also use a .223 but a hmr will do it with less noise and still hits hard.

I am debating getting an HM2 rifle of some sort but it seems like that caliber is going away.
