| So what's the deal with the Hahn Top Mount conversion block? I know it doesn't have BHO, however that isn't important to me. I do however want to be able to switch calibers easily from 9mm to say .22lr. Anyone have any feedback on the top mount....is it as reliable as the dedicated block? OR should I go with a bottom mount? |

Any block that does not hav ean actuator can have BHO as long as you use the correct bolt catch - 9mm long finger Colt or RRA catch. The only drawback is that you have to remove the bolt catch to install/remove the block if you go that route, which will make it basically the same install/remove procedure as a dedicated top load block. If you want to be able to switch easily between calibers, go with a bottom load block or the VM Hytech block that uses Uzi mags. |

it is very easy to remove it just drops in and pulls out. I have one and want to go dedicated shoot me an email or pm and we can make a deal. I don't have one of the others to compare but I thought i would be swapping between 9mm and .223 and have a dedicated 9mm gun now. It has been flawless. |
I was responding to your incorrect assessment that BHO is not available with the std. top load block and mistakenly assumed you might be wanting BHO and ease of installation - if so, then a bottom load block with an actuator built in is the way to go. If you don't care about BHO and just want ease of installation, then you have two additional options - std. top load or VM Hytech. If you do want BHO with a std. top load block, it can be done, but it makes the installation/removal of the block essentially the same process as if you had the dedicated top loader. |

Thanks for all the info guys! Yeah I don't care so much for the BHO feature...not that big a deal to me. I would like to have an easy switch between 9mm and 22lr since this is my only SBR'd receiver at this point. I may eventually SBR my dedicated 22lr....maybe down the road. How do you get BHO with a standard top load block....isn't it missing the the little BHO feature the dedicated block has? |
You need to install a Colt style 9mm bolt catch on top of the block. Tha bolt catch has an extended "finger" that is actuated by the magazine follower. |
My std top load does, but my dedicated top load just had a spring tensioned roller with no provisions to adjust the tension or secure it firmly into the lower. On a side note, it amazes me that there so many people that don't know about the long finger 9mm bolt catches and that they can be used with any block without an actuator to get LRBHO? These bolt catches have been around for many, many years from Colt and now from RRA. Why isn't that info in the faq? Or is it and no one is reading the faq? |
That's more dependent on just how in spec your lower is and really has nothing to do with the bolt catch itself. Both the 9mm long finger and the std 5.56 bolt catches have broken in the past for some people and will continue to break in the future in some 9mm set ups. You can mitigate the risk by using a longer 9mm specific buffer or adding a small spacer in your buffer tube to reduce the overtravel of the 9mm bolt. |
I think you may be confusing things a bit. If you went with the long finger 9mm bolt catch and a std top load block, the catch would need to be removed to get the std top load block out so you could then use your .22 kit. I don't think you can use a .22 kit with a 9mm bolt catch installed in your lower (I never tried it though). Everything really depends on what features you want from your 9mm block, what mags you want to use and how quick and easy it is to convert between 9mm and .22/.223. If you want a quick and easy to convert set up, you will probably want to just leave a std .223/5.56 bolt catch in your lower and use one of the following blocks: 1. bottom load block (may or may not have BHO actuator to work with .223/5.56 bolt catch) 2. VM Hytech block (no BHO - only uses Uzi mags) 3. std top load block (no BHO with std .223/5.56 bolt catch) If you end up with a bottom or top load block that does not have a BHO actuator, you can add BHO by using the long finger 9mm bolt catch, but it may require you to remove it to get the block out or to use the lower in a .22/.223 configuration. In the end, it's all just a matter of personal preference. Do what makes you happy and fits your budget. |
