Hi Guys

Just purchased a Ciener mod. I have put around 300 Rnds through using two types of ammo.

My AR is sighted in accurately using a Nikon Red Dot - even low end Remington .223 is accurate. Better still with Hornaday .223 PD rounds.

I put in the Ciener fire 20 rounds using either Rem Thunderbolt .22 LR or Aguila Supermaximum HV LR rounds and I can't get 1 in 20 even on paper let alone on target at 100 yards. They are all over the place. I have not tried 50 or 25 yards yet. Even so.

What gives. I don't even know what to try?

Help?

The conversion has virtually nothing to do with accuracy. Barrel type and twist rate has everything to do with accuracy.

Thank you - that helps a lot. What do I do re-barrel the AR?

I have had decent to good results in my 1/9 twist barrels depending on ammo.
The thunderbolts and the hyper stuff isn't what I would recommend. Try some Aguilla 40 gr high velocity or the Aguilla standard velocity stuff. Aguilla has usually been one of the better ammo's in my Ceiner. Reliability will be somewhat less with standard velocity (more so in a new unit) but accuracy will generally be much better than HV . I like CCI std or Wolf MT .
Keep in mind that a 5.56/223 is a very flat shooting gun and any rimfire through the same barrel will hit lots lower at 100 yards requiring some sight adjustment (a foot or better?)
If your barrel is 1/8 or 1/7 don't expect your results to be spectacular

Thank you for this. I will try an ammo shift and sighting high. The bulk of misses seem to be lower right.

+1 on the aguila.  w/ super extras, i get quarter-size groups all day long at 25 yd.

minimags work good too although not quite as tight.

fed. bulk packs also work good although  a few flyers happen.

Maybe I misunderstood, but it sounds like the OP is expecting .22LR to shoot to the same POI as regular .223?  Of course this is not going to happen due to the different ballistics, especially at 100yds.  Try again at 25 and then 50yds.  At least the groups should be reasonable (expect 1.5-2" @ 50 from a 1:9 barrel), even if the POI is off a bit.

You understood correctly. I misunderstood what to expect. I was assuming that even with the different ballistics that 100 yards should yield not groupings but at least on paper.

Thank you all. I noe have more realistic expectations and two different approaches - Different ammo and 25 and 50 yard trials to determine results. BTW the .223 is rifled at 1X9 inches - bbl length is 20 inches.

Thanx again guys.

Sight in at 50-75 yards, and preferably at 50. POI on a Ciener using a scope is signficantly LOWER than .223. I'm planning on running a comparison this weekend using a Ciener with my 1:7 rate AR barrel compared to a 10/22 with a YHM 1:16 barrel to see the difference in accuracy. I'll post with pics once available and completed.

Hi, yes try CCI and Federal bulk pak I have 1/9 twist barrel and get 2-3 inch groups at 50 yards. And I consider that good for me at my age and I here it is average. So that is about what you can expect. Good luck and keep us posted we want to know the outcome. Other wise enjoy it

Roger that. Going to the range this weekend. Thanx.

Different POI's as stated. My experience with a Bushy 1 in 9 twist barrel and my Ceiner. At 100 yds off the bench with a Trijicon Reflex, Federal bulk. I'm getting minute of 5 gal bucket groups. Bullets are all over the place. Maybe a scope would help tighten the groups up? I hav'nt tried that yet.

1 in 12 twist gives me tighter groups at 25 yds, hav'nt shot it at 100 yet. If your looking for accuracy, 1 in 16 twist would be ideal. Just my experience, others mileage may vary.

Hey Guys

I just spent a week at the range in OA on vacation. I am happy to report that I got good performance from the Ceiner retrofit at 50 yards with all ammunition tried. The drop at 100 yards was 16-18 + inches. Hence my original consternation.

I am tuning up a .207 WSM Weatherby Mark V and it is a tack driver at 200 yards with 1" MOA on all premium ammo tried.

Thanx for everyone's response in this thread.

FWIW, AFAIK the ideal barrel length for a .22lr is 16" or so.  Anything longer and you actually begin to LOSE velocity.  You might have less bullet drop from a 16" (or even 14.5") barrel.
