I finally got the chance to finish putting my 9mm carbine back together today, and because of all of the discussion of why this type of weapon has failures to eject, I decided to test my magazines and see how things worked. Using dummy rounds in both the modified Uzi magazines I got from Rock River with the carbine and my X-marked CProducts magazines, I had 100% success in feeding, extracting and ejecting. The dummy rounds go about 6 feet away and spin on their sides. So I got the bright idea of checking how the thing would work with an empty case. I dug out some AMERC cases I'd inadvertently processed all the way through sizing (they were still around because I'd used them for brass cleaning tests), put one into the chamber, and let the bolt close on it. Then I braced the butt on my hip and yanked on the charging handle as fast and hard as I could, just like with the dummy rounds. 100% extraction. But with or without a magazine in the weapon, it NEVER "ejected" that case. The case hit the ejector alright, but didn't get ejected, just pushed off the bolt face. With or without either type of magazine. I've tweaked the ejector so that it has a fraction of a millimeter clearance from the bolt's feed rib, and it's obviously in play because the cases come off the bolt every time. So am I having this problem because these cases are processed (no primer) so they're too light? As I said, my dummy rounds go flying when I go through the same procedure... I don't think I have any 9mm cases sitting around that still have a primer in them AND would fit in the chamber. Suggestions and constructive comments would be truly appreciated. |

Here's an update on this. I really don't care now why processed empty cases didn't eject properly for me when hand-cycled. I took my carbine to the range today and it ran great both with my Uzi magazines and my original, X-marked CProducts magazines (with the original followers!). The processed empties were probably too light to have enough kinetic energy to bounce off the ejector properly, and I'll look at making up some "test" empties with weighted primer pockets, but that's a moot point for this particular issue. I tweaked my ejector because I had some problems with ejection, and that fixed my problems. (I'll also make sure I don't let the lower get knocked around when there's no upper on it, and maybe that'll keep me from having these problems again!) |
