Anybody have an Oly Arms .45acp AR? I just ordered one from CMMG and was wondering if there are any issues I need to be aware of other than the proprietary magazines that are no longer imported by IMI. I have spoken w/ Oly Arms and they are currently 2 months out on producing a new mag for it. Until then I have ordered a Hahn Precision 9mm mag block for it and I will be modifing sten mags to hold .45acp (Thanks TANGOCHASER). Does anybody have any pointers, tips or complaints about the Oly AR-45, Hahn Precision's mag block that I will be using in it or any isuues w/ the sten mags I will be modifing. Also, post some pics of your Oly .45acp AR if youv'e got them. I will be posting mine once I have recieved it. Below you will find a link to where I purchased it, if anyone else is looking to pick one up for a good price. CMMG, Inc. |

I got the OA K9 and K45 Upper. Both work great. The 45 mag is a PIA to load do i dont shoot it that much. there are some guys that work/sell OA stuff at the local gun show and they had some of the modified GG mags but they were $60+ IIRC. i guess OA found a lot of them and are/were selling them. the only thing i can say is that my dealer/smith told me to make sure the mags are snug in the magwell. if you have alot of slop, you will have problems. I put some layers of masking tape on my Hahn to takeup the f/b play. i havent shot it w/o the tape, but i can say i havent had any issues. |
How many rounds do the GG&G mags hold? |
MMcfpd, What lower do you have on the one on the right? Is that a bazooka bros or something else. Oh, how many rounds do the grease gun mags hold? |
|
Yes, that's a Bazooka Brothers BAZ45. Works great, but I think they make CNC AR45s look plentiful. GG mags hold 30 rounds. IIRC, TANGOCHASER was experimenting with cutting them down to ~20 rounds. Is that right, TANGO? ETA - The Uzi mags (16 and 10 round) work just fine, but they're expensive and take some hunting. I've acquired 6 16 rounders and that's all of those I'll ever own. |
If he hasn't, I know others have. There was some talk of it in the CavArms thread on the MKII .45 gg conversions. To the poster that mention loading .45 mags sucked, get a loader, they cost about 10 bux. I've found them at gunshows, and I ordered one from SG. They make them for the gg mags, not sure if it'll fit on an uzi mag. But it does help a lot. |
Spoke w/ CMMG when I placed my order and the Oly .45acp AR comes w/ 1-16round factory magazine. Hopefully I won't have any problems w/ the Hahn Precision 9mm sten mag block and I can slightly modify some sten mags to accept the .45acp and then I can put the Oly mag up until they come out w/ a replacement mag. |

There are almost always Uzi mag loaders for sale on Gunbroker at $5-10. To use them with an Uzi mag modified for use in an Oly .45, you need to cut the skirt band on one side. Oly-modified Uzi mag on the left: ![]() Cut Uzi mag loader: ![]() They work, though, which is a good thing because the Uzis are a lot harder to top off than the GG mags. Also, I talked to Oly about a week ago and was told to not hold my breath waiting for their new alternate magazine. |

The mags will work fine even if there is some slop. The big advantage of the Oly pistol system is they feed everything and anything and the tolerances are very forgiving. The cone shaped bolt and barrel extension act like one huge feed ramp. As long as the mag will seat high enough for the bolt to strip a round from the mag, it will load and fire. I successfully cut down GG mags to 10, 15, and 20rds. I had a local CNC machine shop make me a bunch of base plates. I gave the last of mine to Justin before I went overseas. |

GG mags are too wide for a regular AR lower like .45 AR CMMG is selling. They can be made to work but you have cut off the reinforcing band on the top pf the mag, squeeze it in a vise till it fits the magwell and then either weld on a mag catch block on the back like Oly does/did or fab up a magwell block with a mag release lever. Easier to get a Hahn Sten magwell block and a bunch of cheap Sten mags. Need to open up the feed lips on the Sten mags so the .45 rounds will ride high enough for the bolt to stip the rounds. Cut about 5-7 coils off the mag spring will make reloading easier. You can get 15-17 rounds of .45 in a Sten mag. You will have to use .45 HPs as FMJ are too long to fit the Sten mag without major surgery on the mags. Oly is supposed to coming out with a new high capacity .45 mag based on the Simunition mags that fits a normal AR magwell. Check out the .45 Conversion thread for more info. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=15&t=345390 |

I bought a used Oly .45 and it ran fine. When I got it, the feed ramp had been opened up a bit, cutting into the upper receiver a bit. I polished it as soon as I got it, and it ran 100%. For those that may be wondering, modified Sten mags will run factory 230 grain FMJs just fine, but only hold 16 to 18 rounds, depending on the mag tolerance. I modified them by cutting off the outside plate and then used a dremel cut off wheel to completely remove the indented groove in the back of the mag. I then rewelded the outside plate and added a single reinforcing strip about half way down the mag. These mags ran great. The feed lips have to be opened up a bit and reshaped too. I sold the upper to get a Thompson. I regret that............thus I really want one of the AR.45s that take unmodified GG mags. It is about the only thing left on my shopping list. ![]() I need a loader to load 9mm in the Stens, but the .45 was easily loaded by hand. |
