I have looked at Spikes and Model 1 and was leaning toward one of the 16" from Model 1. When done I want the handling characteristics to be as close to my go to middy carbine as possible. Then I built a couple of uppers (5.56) and now that I see how easy it is, I am considering building a 16" middy upper chambered in 5.56 but dedicated to .22rf with a Ciener kit. What I like about this idea is that with a bolt and BCG I can easily 'convert' it back to 5.56 if I wanted to sell or use as a 5.56. ' I am aware of the need for a slower twist rate and a very GOOD cleaning before using with centerfire ammo. Pros? Cons? Thanks. |

I am spending most of my time with a 16" mid length. I picked up one of the Model 1 Sales M4 dedicated uppers and have no problems adjusting between it and the centerfire. I have not shot the M1 upper with the irons, so I may notice a little bit of difference there... Mikey |
| I have a spikes that I have put 10's of thousands of rounds through. Rcs guns sent me two uppers this summer to try out. I could reccomend either. I linda like that rcs guns uses 10/22 barrels, but to others that might be a deal breaker. Both have greatcustomer service. |
RCS uses 10/22 barrels? Interesting. Anyone tried one out. I really like the idea of using a 10/22 barrel since I know they are plenty accurate. |
Not to mention you can get them off ebay for around $20. |
you must not have read my post ? i'm using a 16" 10/22 bbl useing the stock ceiner 22 conversion kiy. just changed it out now running the bbl on a different upper and cav arms lower. pics to follow. |

Any pictures of the actual modifications done to the barrel? You can find pull offs for pennies on the dollar, but I need to know how to make it work. |
If you have access to the archives I posted my review of the RCS upper I have.. Here is a link to the pics I took for the review http://s49.photobucket.com/albums/f292/Tracy_Brian_House/AR15%20Upper/ Once I got the kinks worked out of the Blackdog mags and got the lips adjusted on my ceiner mags it ran without problems.. You will need to keep it lubed good though.. Brian |
| I have a dedicated RCS upper. or should I say I have a dedicated upper built by RCS using my 10/22 barrel and an upper and handguard I provided them. My understanding is that they press a bushing onto the barrel so it fits the upper just like a normal barrel/barrel extension. They mod the JAC kit and use the factory chamber on the 10/22 barrel. Mine shoots great except when it doesn't (I seem to be having a problem with my BDM mag with FTE). |
If running a suppressor, I would be very careful using just any old AR barrel. Some won't stabalize some .22 ammo. The ideal twist for a .22 is 1:16. It would suck for people to get baffle strikes by using a barrel with a less than ideal twist. I recently bought a Spikes Tactical upper and am pretty happy with it. The BDMs work great. The chamber was a bit rough and I had some extraction problems. After a few hundred rounds that seems to have worked itself out though. Awesome service from Spike's. ![]() I still can't say I care for the Ciener kit in the Spike's upper. It isn't really 100% reliable yet. Close enough for a range toy though. Mark |
