I want a 9mm AR (I think the RRA), but would like to try to minimize velocity, so am thinking of ordering the RRA 9mm from ADCO and have them chop the barrel to about 12.5-in and permanently add a ~4-in extended flash hider.

I haven't found a lot of choices for extended flash hiders and even less feedback on them.  I don't realy care if it hides flash or not, but being light would be a plus.  Cans are not allowed here, and a fake can might be hard to explain, so I'd rather avoid those.  Longer would be better.

What extended FH should I buy?

just curious, but if you aren't going to use a can why would you want to lower velocity?  I personally have never really understood the advantage of extended flash hiders in any caliber... is there something i am missing?

(honest question, I just don't really understand the reason for  an extended FH in 556 or pistol caliber rifles, I am sure there is one I am missing)

I am speaking only about the 5.5" FHs etc, not the 1.5" versions to make a 14.5in barrel into 16", that one is self explanatory

might be helpful to use low velocity ammo in 9mm, 150gr or so..

I got mine from 45Bravo (Link) and the barrel work was done by ADCO.

Here's my 9mm XM177-ish carbine:

If the velocity is low enough, I can shoot steel targets without damaging them.

I shoot pistol at our local ranges pistol bays at least twice a month, that have USPSA gear including falling steel targets.  With a 9mm AR I can shoot the same courses I shoot now with both pistol and rifle.  If the velocity is low enough, I can shoot the steel without damaging them.  Even if the velocity isn't low enough for steel, it makes it safer to use within the bays.   The result is cheaper, easier rifle practice.  I already have enough ARs for defense.

$1.50,  Thanks, I'll keep that link.  How long is that FH?  Is there one specific to the 9mm, i.e. is the ID big enough on the standard?

I also found this that looks promising, but I don't know if it can be made to wok with 9mm:
