So I want a .22 conversion kit for the AR so I can shoot recreationally without having to hock my kidney on the black market....
What are my options? The Ciener kit seems pretty popular. I see that DPMS has a drop in bolt kit. I've seen whole uppers...
What else is there? What's the best way to go and why?

Also, on the kits that use your original 5.56 / .223 barrel, Do they damage the rifling at all? It would seem that since a .22 is smaller than a .223 (even if it IS only .003) that it would kinda "bounce around" a bit in the barrel, which doesn't sound like a particularly good idea....

So... educate me.

the ciener is by far the best and most versatile option.

you can go as simple as a drop in kit, or have a custom dedicated upper made.

whatever kit you decide to use, make sure you pick up some magazines for it from black dog machine, aka BDM.

They're awesome.

Not an expert on this, but my thoughts. The difference of .003" will be negated by the "crush" of the rifling. I have the Ciener kit, and thoroughly enjoy it. 30 seconds to change to and back from. Adapter has a "cartridge" shaped piece that fills the chamber, smooth bore for the .22 to ride down until it engages the rifling. I don't see much room for the "bounce factor". Accuracy tends to suffer, but not a whole lot. Still good for fun plinking. Haven't had it very long so I can't tell you about long term effects. I have put about 200 rounds thru, no misfires, no jams, no problems. Sure is nice to go to the range, shoot 50-100 rounds of .223 and then another 100 of .22 v.s. 200 rounds of .223. Saves a bunch on reloading costs and time. That's about all I can offer. Have fun.

I have a Ciener .22 conv kit I bought at a fun show about 25-30 years ago. I have shot about 40,000 rounds in it. I've shot semi and full auto and have NEVER had any trouble with it. I just give it a good wipe and keep it wet. I find that it drops about 3-6 in at 100 yards, but at 50 its almost dead on. I use wallyworld 550 rd Fed pack at about 10.00 a pop. Get one and have fun.

eta: get 4-5 of the 30 rd bdm mags at bout 29.00 each

you will get a lot of lead buildup cause or the twist rate of the .223 barrel but not that big of a problem. by far the cheapest is the ceiner kit. get one you will be happy +1 on the BDM.

ARFCOM Pistol & Rimfire Caliber Forum

The only two viable options currently are either a Ceiner conversion or one or another version of the M261 - either USGI surplus or new production from Olympic.  None of the others have a reliable source of parts or magazines.

I've been very happy with mine.  As far as accuracy, I get about 2"-3" @ 50yds with mine.  I have a red dot on it, so I am not able to get super nice groups.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but I've shot about 25K-30K rounds per year with my Ciener for the past two years without any noticeable barrel fouling.   I did crud up an SWR trident 9 suppressor, but it wasn't meant to be used with .22's, so I should have known better.

What sort of lead buildup are you talking about?  Is this personal experience, or hearsay chatter?
