Hi...well, my 7.62x39 plans seems to on a timeline for Cproducts mags, so how about a 9MM? Pretty accurate? Ammo is cheap, marries up with the Glock-17 for rounds...but some questions: 1. Is the magazine well adapter permanent for the magazines? 2. Is the lower unique, or can a regular lower just accept the 9mm upper? Seems like a fun project...are they reliable? TX in advance! v/r W |

For Glock 17 mags you have to get the Upper from Olympic. If you don't want an Oly gun then you'll need a gun that works by the "Colt system". Model 1, CMMG, RRA, Colt, J&T, and many others operate on the Colt system. You can use Colt mags, C Products mags, ProMags, and modified Uzi mags to run in a "Colt system". There is a mag block that fills the .223 magwell for a "Colt system". The mag block will reduce the size of the magwell and there is also an ejector attached to the mag block. Most mag blocks allow you to use the mag release of the Lower. There are a couple different mag blocks out there but many work on the same general principle. Some are dedicated while others are easily removable. Any .223 Lower will work. My 9mm is reliable. I will tell you that I can't use a trigger thats had the "15-minute" job or I get light strikes. The 9mm firing pin has a spring and the reduced power hammer spring can't overcome the firing pin spring and set off the primer. I don't consider that a reliability problem with my gun because a regular power hammer spring goes bang 100% of the time. Depending on the hammer you use Bolt Ramping may be necessary. Shoot MGP an IM for info on bolt ramping. He also does bolt ramping if you decide you want/need it. |

But in the big picture the weapons are quite different. The 9mm is a short range proposition 150 yars and in (200 yards max), great for plinking and as you say able to use inexpensive ammo. The 7.62x39 is a moderate range assault cartridge throwing a similar weight bullet but significantly faster. If you are just plinking the 9mm rules! if you need inside the home protection I think 9 is still the winner with the right ammo. But if you want knockdown energy from 100 to 300 yards the commie round wins by way of more energy and flatter shooting. For all-around 5,56 (223) wins. For short range and pure fun 9mm is real nice, I'd rate 7.62x39 tops for modest range hunting but last in every other arena. Particularly because of poor ammo variety. I'm sure this will raise a few eyebrows, let's see what else you hear in replies. |

Gents...thanks for your insights! I posted this before I read all the great info in the FAQ section....this gun would be for turning ammo to noise, easy for my wife to shoot, and of course cheap...and keeps the Glock company...still confused though, seems like just popping a 9mm upper on a DPMS lower is not enough....new buffer etc. ....was thinking of building up a DPMS lower parts kit, with some kind of mag block and buying 9mm upper...bugt looks more complicated than that...am I missing something? Thanks... AND BY THE WAY...thanks to the moderators who moved this post to where it belonged! READ, THINK, WRITE...I got some of that out of order...v/r W |

You need - 9mm upper - 9mm hammer - 9mm magazine block to use uzi mags, colt, cproducts or promags magzines (prefer the RRA 9mm block) - 9mm buffer - 9mm magazines 1) replace the hammer in a standard ar15 lower with the 9mm hammer 2) swap out the current stock buffer with the 9mm buffer 3) insert the 9mm magazine block and tighten the screws to secure 4) swap the current upper with a 9mm upper 5) load 9mm magazine, insert and start shooting. That's it. |
I'm just getting into a 9mm AR myself. Have had and enjoyed a couple AR's in 223 for a long time, but ammo prices and availability is my excuse for jumping on the "9mm AR bandwagon" now. I got a 9mm upper from CMMG, also got the Hahn mag block and a couple 32 round magazines from them at the same time. I am waiting on a "9mm hammer" and should be able to fire a few rounds. Still unsure if I should use a different buffer. Also what magazines can I get if I want more? CMMG gets $35 each for theirs, looking to get a couple more in the furture for less if possible. |

I have two 9mm rifles right now. One 16" Mid and one 5" SBR. With the exception of the SBR receiver, they are Colt pattern RRAs. They are Great Fun! Lower noise, lower cost to feed, and a great platform for introducing new shooters. I'm going to be ordering some of the C-Products 9mm mags from Midway soon. I have some of the polymer Promags, and while they run well and cost little, they can be a bear to get fully inserted when full. I anticipate the Stainless CP mags will load and drop like mags are supposed to. I've heard rumors of an AR pattern Beta... I might have to drop the 9mm parts on an M16 if that comes around at the right price. ;-) |
Here is a good buffer to use: Slash's Q-Buffer C Products 20 or 32 round mags, 32 round ProMag, 32 round modified UZI from RRA should work fine with the Hahn mag block. |
| I called my local dealer and had him get a price on the Oly K9-GL. He called back and said $820 but the kicker was now 8 - 10 weeks. He was told it's build as ordered right now. I would really like the AR system for wife and kids to stay familiar with but I'm considering the Kel tec carbine that takes glock mags. |
