I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it.

How exactly does the action of the bolt assembly function on the pistol caliber ARs? Is it recoil action, or something else. Does this require a specialized bolt carrier, and bolt assembly?

I'm interested in building a .40 or .45 caliber AR, and have no idea where to begin researching it. I currently have one SBR AR15 under my belt, and like the idea of a pistol round for a SBR.

Any answer's and information will be greatly appreciated.

recoil, yes and yes

most pistol caliber uppers are straight blowback, with a special one- or two-piece bolt/carrier
