So I recently acquired 2 Cav Arms lowers, so now my dilema is what to build? I'm leaning towards  9mm, since the ammo is cheap and easy to find.
Are there any pequliar things that I should know before I attempt this?
This will be my first build.
TIA

ETA: To be more specific, which adapters should I consider and which should I stay away from?  Does anyone make a specific kit for the Cav Arms lower?

The CAv Arms lowers are perfect for a .45 build.

.45 is the way to go, IMO.  In my spare time, I've been attempting to fit a Hahn 9mm block to a Cav lower for several weeks.  It has been an exercise in frustration thus far.

$165 for .45 ACP Buffer and Hahn mag block.  Add $15 if you need a Wolff XP Carbine buffer spring.

Thanks very much.. I was thinking about the 9mm, but after I started looking at all the info here, .45 is the way to go.  Now its just waiting for that paycheck time....

My .45ACP upper is now my upper of choice when going to the range.  One question though, will you be doing any full auto shooting with the upper?  If so, you will probably want to get the MGI rate reducing buffer as Slash's buffer doesn't seem to like full auto as I would get bolt bounce every 5-10 rounds.  Also, the ROF of the .45 is too fast to be controllable.  The MGI buffer slowed it down to a manageable rate.

No full auto here... unfortunately
Maybe sometime in that far far away future...

I'm putting together a 22lr dedicated upper on one of mine, my others are all 223 for right now.

I have several hundred customers, and you're the first to report this problem.  Many, many shooters are using my buffer in FA .45s. I wish that you would have contacted me directly.

What internals does a .45 build need?  Does it need a special hammer?  I think a .45 build might be a great way to go.

Same internals as any other lower.  I am using a DPMS LPK (because I like the rounded hammer instead of the notched hammer in most other LPK's).

Some (lucky) people have pre-86 RDIAS' (Registered Drop In Auto Sears).  And no, us 'normal' people can't convert anything to full auto.  Hope that helps.

OR pre-86 RLL (Registered Lightning Link) such as myself.

I loved my Oly/cavarms .45

Then i bought a M10/45.

The .45 AR hasn't left the safe in well over a year. It's a great plinker, and a fun toy. The Hahn block and Slash's buffer are perfect! I just cant' afford to feed both.

That is exactly why I love the upper so much now.  I never thought that 1000 rounds of quality 230gr .45ACP would be almost twice as inexpensive as quality .223.

They do have a 'standard' aluminum one now, but the mag well is a 'normal' AR (it is called the Cav-15AL, IIRC).

They have shown a CAD picture of a metal lower that took standard RET's and stocks, but  it had the same take down pins and magwell as the polymer lowers.  I think too many people started to ask Cav Arms about it, so they locked the thread and let it die.  Personally, I think they should have released it...

stupid.

Everyone makes aluminum lowers. What the heck is the point?

They woudl have really had a selling point with the wider mag well version. Standard AR lowers are a dime a dozen.

With several other .45 lowers close to release, how much would you invest in R&D/testing/startup costs?

Close to release?  The AR 45 from Ameetec is still dependant upon getting enough pre-orders so it's a maybe, MGI is delayed again for a redesign of their $250 mag well that's attached to their $500 receiver,  so it can work with an Olympic Arms upper (smart move on their part) and a 10% lower from CNC Guns has to be refinished by ones self (if your handy enough) or by Kahlan Weaponry who is relatively unknown.  When Cav Arms showed their design there was no AR45 or MGI even close to production, if designed at all.  Plus with the one lower I can shoot my 5.56/6.8, throw in a mag block and thump away with 45.  I just thought it was a good idea, but hey I'm just the guy with the money to spend.
