What are the options on the flash hiders for 9mm barrels?  I like those YHM flash hiders but they only come in .223 or .308.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I'm interested in this as well.  Especially since the change in govt, I want to make all my upgrades before everything is outlawed.

Thanks

PS - is one even necessary???

The only 9 mm flash hiders I've encountered are A1, A2, Vortex, and QD types for suppressors, like the YHM. Oh, you can also get a 5.5" one. I currently have a Vortex on one of my 9mm but may change it because the "tuning fork" effect bothers me.

As most 9mm barrels come with 1/2-36 threads, there are just not many options.
If you want something else, you can either SBR the lower and then shorten and thread the barrel, or shorten, thread and permanent attach something.

Of course I can handle either of these for you.

Almost any 223 muzzle device can be opened up to clear 9mm bullets.

Flash hiders are not really required on 9mm's, but they look cool...

TROS makes a 3 lug adaptor. You can then use a HK94 3 lug flash hider

Randall, you drumming up business again?  Not that you won't get mine when I ready to finish my 9mm build...someday.

I was under the impression there wasn't enough meat on an A1 or A2 to allow the hiders to be bored out to 9mm.

Then that was the wrong impression.
SOME A1 and A2 hiders will actually clear a 9mm bullet without ANY work.
It's the thread difference that's the main problem, 1/2-36 vs. 1/2-28.

You can't re-thread a 1/2-28 muzzle device into a 1/2-36 muzzle device.
That's why I suggest shortening the barrel.
Then there will be enough barrel diameter to properly thread it 1/2-28 for normal muzzle devices that have simply been clearanced for a 9mm bullet.

Great information Randall.  I will be getting in touch with you.

Thanks

Adding some more great info...

Look at the barrel wall thickness of 1/2-XX threads on a 9mm barrel.
You end up with about 0.045" thick barrel at the base of the threads.
I recommend going to 9/16-24 if you are just going to add a simple flash hider.
This gets you to more like 0.075" wall thickness.

Here's a picture of the two side by side:

hey that 9/16" 9mm would not happen to be an XM177 clone would it?

i think that is mine, looks great so far

ETA: randall can re thread your flash hider/brake/compensator for the new thread size for a reasonable fee.

There's only one lightweight colt chrome lined barrel in the shop being made into an XM177 right now, so if that's your barrel, then Yes, that's the one in the picture.
The moderator is all fitted and pinned/welded on now.
Barrel is boxed up to ship as soon as I get some more packing tape...

I beg to differ - I recently watched an Uzi (no FH) and a MAX-11 (M16A1 FH) fired at night side by side. The MAX-11 definitely had much less muzzle flash. This was with Winchester white box 9mm ammo.
