Everything I read here makes me think that the only way to go with a 9mm AR is to have the bolt ramped. But if that's so then why don't the manufacturers ramp the bolts at the factory? And why does M60Joe say "I will not ramp semi auto bolts" on this page (at the bottom)? I'm looking at a factory RRA 9mm carbine, and wondering about a lot of things, with a ramped bolt being the first issue. |
| Neither of the factories see the non-ramped bolt as a problem. I have no idea why M60joe will not ramp a semiauto bolt. There may be a really good reason, However I have never seen a S/A bolt. All current (Colt) bolts and every RRA bolt is a F/A bolt. So it's a non issue. |
| Yeah all 9mm bolts are set up for full-auto use. The only reason I can think of M60Joe not wanting to do it for the semi-auto users is because it probably doesn't need it as much as if you were going to shoot it in full-auto. Because the bolt extends down hitting the hammer more to slow down the RPM's in full-auto. This causes excesive wear on the hammer and trigger pins and can create trigger slap as well. So ramping the bolt releives this stress. I ramped my own bolt using a Dremel tool. I've heard that in some later Colt models they had the bolts ramped from the factory. I also see that M60Joe put "NFA rules apply". Maybe he considers it something only for NFA full-auto users. |
