I've read in several different post  a reference was made to a DPMS hammer that was compatible with a 9mm Oly style bolt assembly and could also be used with the .223 bolt assembly. Other post talk of cutting the tang off am M16 hammer, or grinding down the back side of a regular .223 hammer. I was wondering if the DPMS hammer available also needs to be ground or is it a seperate part # available from DPMS...If hammer needs to be retrofitted can anyone recommend who might do this or sell a hammer already modified. Thanks for any replies.

the DPMS hammer is an M16 hammer with the sear catch already milled off.  most other AR15 hammers have a notch at the top on the face.

edit:  DPMS hammer doesn't need to be ground for colt style 9mm (doesn't matter for Oly anything will work).

The hammer in the middle (with the spring attached) is the only hammer that you will ever need for your semi-auto AR-15 desires.

Hammers start life as a M16 forging, then are machined to their final shape.

In the pic, the hammers is as follows, left to right --

Left -  M16 --> see the lug on the tail for the auto sear to catch

Middle - M16 with lug cut off (bought this one at funshow 10yr ago, still raw from lug removal) - also sold by a few parts vendors like this, semi-auto legal, and all you will ever need for whatever in the AR-15 world.

Right - std "SP-1" style hammer, with a notch to snag fire pin collar if you tried to remove/dissable/break the disconnect in AR-15, thus jamming the rifle as the bolt-carrier comes forward.

DO NOT TRY THIS hammer with a COLT pattern 9mm bolt, it will lock up approx 1/2" from closing when you release the bolt forward to load the firearm,,, not hard to remedy, but you will need to use a M-16 style hammer to eliminate this problem.

If you choose to use 9mm in the COLT pattern, RAMP THE BOLT !! Then it will resemble that of a std 223/556 gas gun carrier -

Thanks SBR7_11... I read alot of your info in the 9mm rimfire FAQ thread. I'm leaning toward the Oly style 9mm though. Is there someone who sells the hammers like the one in the middle you suggested or can i cut down an SP1 hammer..Thanks again.

First source is DPMS, hammer is pictured on thier site (I hate navigating their site)... there waa a fella that posted here in the past -->Steve at Hallmark Enterprize be  another, but I do not see him in the industry section.   Joeblack might also sell you a neutered M16 hammer...   The Oly 9mm bolt is simply a partially machined  AR carrier, with a bolt head secured to the front of the carrier body.

Thanks again, i knew i had read reference to the DPMS bolt being available but when i ask Joe Carlson about the hammer he acted as if he didn't have a clue to what i was talking about. Thanks again for your help, i'm slowly but surely getting all my questions answered in preperation for my building an AR pistol project.

So you are saying for a 9mm full auto AR-15 the perfered hammer is a M16 hammer?

The Colt 633/635 9mm SMG is just a 9mm upper  sitting on a M16 lower.

You need full-auto parts set to run full-auto (M16),  So you would just swap upper onto the registered receiver.

If  you is running a "Lightning Link/Auto-Connector --> semi-auto parts are used.

If running a semi-auto AR, and you have a legal "drop in auto sear",  then you will need to change trigger group to M16 parts to get your full-auto fire.
