I'm wanting to buy an Olympic Arms 9mm rifle that takes the Glock mags. But they do not offer them in a flat top. Do I have to have a 9mm upper or will any upper work?

So, let me get this straight.....9mm uppers are EXACTLY the same as 5.56 uppers but with a different brass deflector and door?

Oly pistol caliber uppers are the exact same as their .223 uppers with the exception that there is no hole for the gas tube to go through. There is also a set of holes below the extraction port and on teh other side of the receiver from the extraction port, to hold their extractor pin/spring system. The port door is the same as on the .223 . You can use the standard hammer with the Oly.

On the Colt/RRA...ect  system they are the same as the .223 with the exception that there is no hole for the gas tube to go through. And they also have the shorttend port door with the deflector. This door and deflector can be moved to a .223 upper and it will work the same. You would just have the gas port hole in the upper. They are interchangeable. You need a different hammer for the pistol calibers from that of a standard rifle.

Both the Oly and Colt systems use an entirely different bolt and carrier from there .223/5.56 counterparts. The barrels on the Oly system are also different than that of the Colts.

I believe I have this correct.

Is the deflector and short door a required?

No

Just imagine that the uppers are the EXACT same and function the EXACT same except for the small drilled holes below the ejection port cover for their ejection spring thing.

You could even buy a surplus Colt M16 upper, drill the hole, and just use that.

I don't consider drilling holes EXACTLY the same.....I thought only OLY had that ejection spring.
