does anyone know if there are any 7.62x25 AR uppers out there?  If not, I think one would be really cool.

Enigma102083,
I know that at least 2 of us have 7.62X25 uppers that operate per the Colt type system.  I believe the other person is Corvus and he mentioned that he got his barrel done by Marty at Teppo-Jutsu so I went and ordered one from him also. I use unmodified PPS-43 mags that I just add the mag notch. I built the mag block to match the unmodified PPS-43 magazines and it all works 100 percent -- it's my favorite pistol caliber carbine.

can you give me details on how exactly a build such as this would be done?  This would make an awesome summer project.

Enigma102083,
I'm guessing you would be building this upper in the Colt type system. You would build this 7.62X25 upper just like you would a 9mm upper except for the magwell adapter for the PPS-43 magazine. Fabricating the magwell adapter will be the hard part.

This is the front and rear blocks -- notice the curve.

The top magblocks are the 7.62x25 blocks and the bottom magblock is a one piece Colt type magblock. Notice on the 7.62 (upper) magblock that the ejector hook is set all the way back into the groove at the rear of the AR magwell. The front block is basically the same as a Colt front block. All the necessary material was taken off the rear block to make room for the PPS-43 mag.

This is a sheet metal sleeve that I made that goes around the front block and just fits in the magwell to take up a little side room since the PPS-43 mag is a little too narrow for the AR magwell. The sheet metal section could have been extended and the magblocks made into a one-piece magblock like a Colt magblock. Please keep in mind that these magblocks were prototypes so they are rough looking but they worked so well I figured why go any further. This was all built before the AWB ended so I had left the ridge on the rear of the PPS-43 mag in place and just cut a groove up the middle on the rear magblock to match it.

I'm not sure you'll get the barrel finished in time to make it a summer project but you could try getting ahold of Teppo Jutsu and see how loaded up with work they are. Give them the specifications of the barrel type and you will need to send them a 9mm bolt so they can check the head space. I use Seller&Bellott 7.62x25 ammo and also found some HP ammo that I shoot some times. I found that the action works much better with an "H" buffer rather than the 9mm buffer -- the "H" buffer is a bit lighter.

that is really cool, so other than the barrel I can just use a 9mm bolt?  Does anyone make a magblock I can buy?

Sorry, no! you will have to make your own magblock.

Here's a thought.  Most folks shooting the 7.62x25 like the fact that they can shoot lots of cheap stuff.  But making the mags work can be a challenge.  The Tok has the same diameter as the 9mm but is longer ... I have proposed in the past to use a shorter loaded length but that was dismissed as it required hand loading.  What if ... the company that we are looking to work with for offering loaded ammo in our proprietary calibers, offered Tok ammo loaded with the 90 gr Hornady XTP, seated to the same overall length as the 9 x 19?  Then you could use Sten, UZI, etc mags without modification.  Granted, you're not shooting the cheap ammo, but you are using the cheap Sten mags and unmodified mag blocks, etc.

If you are wondering about performance, QuickLoad suggests that the Tok with that 90 XTP seated to 9x19 loaded length still comes out a 16" barrel at 1900 fps, compared to the 88 gr RN at normal length at 2236 fps.  Yes, you lose fps, but it makes a LOT easier conversion.

It's a thought.

then what's the point of using that caliber?  why not just go with a 9mm conversion then?  Defeats the purpose in my mind.

Marty,
Making the magblocks that will really work for the PPS-43 magazine is a bit of a pain -- too bad you don't know somebody that can do injection molding and make magwell adapters out the the same stuff that the plastic guns are made of. It would require some metal in the plastic to support the ejector and a metal guide ramp in the front. Since the PPS-43 magazine is narrower than the AR magwell, the magblock could be built with metal side plates like a Colt style 9mm magwell adapter and even be a drop-in from the top so no set screws are necessary.

By the way Marty, that mid-length barrel you built for me helped me build one heck of a nice upper in 7.62X25 -- thanks!

The fact that not everybody will have one.
Surplus 7.62x25 is fairly cheap.
7.62x25 gets a lot more use out of the carbine length barrel than 9x19.

That's what I'm saying,  I don't want to go rigging up a fancy propriatary caliber based on 7.62x25 I want 7.62x25

Let me do some looking.  Got contacts with CNC R&D company.  Basically would need front block section with ramp, rear block section with ejector (bolt on) and two side plates (attach to blocks with screws).  Four parts, CNC from steel (due to steel mags rubbing up against them).  Someone to notch the mags.  Can be done

That would be really cool Marty! By the way Marty, there is a groove up the middle of the rear block for the metal rib that sticks out on the PPS-43 magazine. I couldn't remove it back before the AWB fadded and I found it helps hold the mag straight -- plus all the mags I've gotten look like new and I didn't want to screw that up.

I did a x25 conversion 8-9 years ago when the Norinco ammo and quality surplus was still available and cheap but haven't shot it for a long time due to the lack of good ammo.  The stuff available now is so-so except for the Romanian but it's $25 more expensive per K than 9mm so I'm still shooting 9mm.
